paul secor
http://www.birminghamtimes.com/2016/06/10-of-the-greatest-jazz-groups-bands-orchestras/ I saw this on Mosaic's weekly ad/blog. I suppose that by titling it 10 of the Greatest Jazz Groups, whoever made up this list figured they could get a free pass. And since, like all lists of this kind, it's subjective, in a sense it's beyond criticism. But - any list of this kind that excludes Louis' Hot 5's and 7's, Bird's quintet (either with Miles or KD - the latter would be my choice), the classic Coltrane Quartet, Jelly Roll's Red Hot Peppers, Ornette's first quartet or mid 60's trio, one of Mingus' groups, to name a few - and includes the World Saxophone Quartet and Cab Calloway (or even the Art Ensemble, as much as I love their music) - doesn't deserve much attention. And, as Michael Cuscuna points out, which version of the Messengers? Plus, a photo of the Brown-Roach Quintet follows the Jazz Messengers listing rather than appearing where it should be. I'm surprised that Mosaic would print something like this list, and I guess I'm surprised that I bothered to comment on it. I evidently just needed something to rant about this morning. kh1958
Fortunately, there are a lot more than ten "ten" greatest jazz groups.
clifford_thornton
yeah, seems pretty slapdash to me. also surely there were quite a number of great jazz bands that never recorded or properly released any music.
