Horace Parlan (1931-2017)

Horace Parlan has been in very poor health for some time. But it is still very sad news to hear of his death.  I have a wonderful DVD about him at home, but as I am out of town cannot come up with the title. Loved his work with Mingus and his Blue Note albums as both leader and sideman. The series of albums he made for Steeplechase are delightful and highly recommended to those unfamiliar with them.

As was true also of pianist Carl Perkins, Parlan demonstrated the ability to be a very fine jazz pianist even though he had a physical disability effecting his hand.

R.I.P.

A favorite since I first heard him with Mingus to his solo sessions and the duos with Archie Shepp on Steeplechase. Many thanks to Morganized for posting the video. Horace Parlan comes across as a genuinely nice man. And thanks to brownie for pointing out that he did lead a courageous life.

Thank you for everything you gave, Mr. Parlan
