Thanks, an interesting read.

A bit curious about this passage - 

For Merewitz, that reality means that maybe jazz “needs to be given the kind of special status that classical music is given.” (The Times has several classical music critics.) But, he said, “the bigger issue is, how does the world find out about what’s going on in New York [jazz] if we only have six to seven listings a week and the occasional feature on a single musician who’s breaking down barriers?”

I wonder what barriers in this day and age is he talking about? Everything seems to have been done to death already.

Well, the only things that haven't been done are the things that haven't been done.

Assume he's referring to cross-genre whatever and that gets pretty tired.

Yeah, i read the "breaking down barriers" thing as referring to artists that are getting mainstream press at any given time: Kamasi Washington, badbadnotgood, Snarky Puppy, Norah Jones, Joey Alexander etc.
