HutchFan
NP: Michel Petrucciani / Ron McClure - Cold Blues (Owl LP) I really enjoy the piano/bass format. No surprise that this one is excellent, given the participants. . . . And the imported French vinyl sounds very nice.    Earlier: Duke Pearson Nonet - Honeybuns (Atlantic/Collectables) Love the "little big band" sound on this record. Pearson was a fine composer -- and an even better arranger, imho.   Edited July 29, 2017 by HutchFan

duaneiac
Recorded July 28, 1963. Lu Watters had retired from music in 1951 and he did not even touch a trumpet again until 1963 when his interest is stopping a proposed nuclear power plant from being built in the Bodega Bay area caused him to take up the instrument once more. This concert at SF's legendary Earthquake McGoon's was held as a benefit for that (ultimately successful) fight and Turk Murphy had the foresight to set up a tape recorder to preserve this reunion with his one-time leader/mentor. Not the highest of fi, but it sounds like a good time was had by all. He's a great guy to talk to and, as you know, has some fabulous records to his credit. Time I gave these another listen! I caught him recently at Swanage with his usual pairing with Alan Barnes plus Art Themen. Took quite a few photos of that (historic) appearance. He was in his usual fine form.
