For once, somebody gave Mingus regal packaging, impulse! worked it, but they were deluxe with a budget, if you know what I mean. Limelight seems like they didn't give a damn about no stinkin' budget until they apparently had no choice. I had a copy of the Limelight reissue - vinyl was fairly beat up, packaging wasn't - and replaced it with the CD version. I listened with Chuck's reservations about this session in mind. I understand his qualms, but I mostly like it. There are tunes that only catch fire when Rivers is soloing, and Donald Byrd seems ill at ease - but to me the positives outweigh the negatives.
