(Still hoping to find more Gene Harris from Japan some day ... there's short video of him at a "100 Fingers" piano-fest event but none so far of what should have been his own outing; and recently I found on youtube a soundboard recording of Ray-Gene-Jeff from a previously unknown Japanese concert but there's only one tune, and the uploader hasn't been active on youtube for years so I guess he'll never share the rest of his treasure.)

I bet that music is great. Those patches on Mbenza's jacket are interesting. I wonder what the story is behind those Oyster ones is.

Bells for the South Side (ECM, 2017) by Roscoe Mitchell.

I hadn’t listened to this one in a year or so, during which time Tyshawn Sorey has really exploded in stature. Listening to this record now, I can hear so much of his sound and input throughout the record.

There’s some amazing players and compositions on these two discs, but the combination of Mitchell and Sorey is very special.

Here is an image I took during a rehearsal for the concert.18403922_1532653930078957_28784908660947

That´s really a treasure, Dizzy Gillespie Quintet with Leo Wright and Lalo Schifrin 1961 in Germany. This is from the SWR archives.

Great tunes: The Mooche, Con Alma, I can´t get started, Kush, and a feature for Leo Wright on flute "Willow Weep for Me".

Download (6).jpg

I didn't know about that one.  The Gillespie quintet with Schifrin and Wright will always have a special place in my heart, with Gillespiana/Carnegie Hall Concert being my first jazz album.

Now playing:
