Morelenbaum arranging this band and Sosa's playing and compositions. . . in spectacular sound. To hear this presented this way is one reason I'm an audiophile as well as a music-lover. Possibly even better than the Roots & Folklore records that came after? I know those well but I'd never listened to Night Fire before now. It has a similar feeling, like the listener is watching an unfolding chamber drama. Very well recorded -- balance between Evans and Gomez is ideal, for once there's just right amount of space between them, albeit Gomez is still Gomez; Evans is in fine form for that period; Morell is just Morell, or so it seems to me. I guess I should qualify "funky" as in "funky for Morell." It was unexpected from my perspective.
