Have to admit I never thought of Marty Morell gettin' funky.

 Yeah, me neither but he's playing some inspired brush work here. Maybe it was being in Tokyo or something but he's having fun. Gomez is kind of a drag here but Morell & Evans are in good form.

Zoot Sims, "Zoot Suite" High Note cd. A live recording with a great group. . . Zoot with Jimmy Rowles, George Mraz and Mousey Alexander. These guys are musical friends and it shows. Sound is just this side of "okay," but once the groove sets in I don't care.

Omar Sosa & NDR Big Band, Arrangements by Jacques Morelenbaum

I had to listen to this one again today. Morelenbaum arranging this band and Sosa's playing and compositions. . . in spectacular sound. To hear this presented this way is one reason I'm an audiophile as well as a music-lover.

Kenny Barron "Sambao" Gitanes Jazz cd

MI0002125460.jpg?partner=allrovi.com

Kenny Barron – piano
Toninho Horta – guitar
Nico Assumpção – bass
Mino Cinelu – percussion
Victor Lewis – drums

Original compositions of Barron's that show his strong musical identity and evoke Brasil. I love this one.

Now on Night Fire (Black Saint, 1981) by the John Carter Quintet.

Possibly even better than the Roots & Folklore records that came after? I know those well but I'd never listened to Night Fire before now.

It has a similar feeling, like the listener is watching an unfolding chamber drama.

Roberto Miranda on bass is just incredible.

Wonderful bop guitarist - largely unsung beyond these shores I guess.

Sorry never to have seen him play. Was due to hear him in Wigan in the summer of 2016, but sadly Louis didn't live that long.

Listened a bit last night. Very well recorded -- balance between Evans and Gomez is ideal, for once there's just right amount of space between them, albeit Gomez is still Gomez; Evans is in fine form for that period; Morell is just Morell, or so it seems to me.

Remember seeing him with Ronnie Scott. It must have been just before Dick Pearce joined that lineup because I think it was just the once.

I guess I should qualify "funky" as in "funky for Morell." It was unexpected from my perspective. Not a bad drummer, but on this one he seemed to let loose a little more.
