Cal Massey "Blues to Coltrane" Candid/Solid Records Japan mono cd.

Sounds so good compared to my earlier version. There should have been more Massey led sessions in the past. He was an interesting writer.

The Candid LP version of that one sounds pretty good.

I am sure it does. I have only been able to compare one of the new Japanese cd reissues to a US Candid LP and that was mono and stereo in the mix as well but the new ones sound far more like the LPs to me than the cd versions I've had before.

I guess I should qualify "funky" as in "funky for Morell." It was unexpected from my perspective. Not a bad drummer, but on this one he seemed to let loose a little more.

I found that Morell let loose a good deal on the two recent Resonance label Evans releases -- "Live at the Top of the Gate" and "Evans in England." Interesting interviews with Morrell and Gomez in the latter set's booklet.

Those are the 2 Resonance Evans releases I didn't get. I stuck with the DeJohnette sets, of which Another Time was my favorite of the two. Gomez, of course, is ubiquitous across them all.

Over time I find I prefer the other two Resonance Evans sets Imentioned; at least I listen to them more often.
