I remember when I first heard this, I thought, "Man, that crowd at this Basin Street club is really quiet". :)

Actually I first heard this in the box set and wasn't paying attention to the album title but was amazed at the great arrangements for a hard bop quintet and the drumming of Max "The Architect" Roach. Another great thing about this disc besides the great sound is it cotains alternates.

I first heard it in the school's listening library in 1974, an OG Emarcy, and the damn thing had already been played so many times that the surface noise left room enough for reasonable people to disagree whether or not there was an audience or not.

Just finishing revisiting this:

Nice Guys by The Art Ensemble of Chicago, on ECM.

Not my favourite AEC by a long way, but the Jarman tracks in particular are still great. I still don't understand how it sold like it did, given the sometimes ferocious contents.

ECM was a really hot label at the time, especially in certain demographics. A lot of those people had "heard about" the band, and this was, to use today's terminology, a "permission structure" for them to actually check them out.

And to be fair about it, ECM had the reach to get their records into damn near any record store that had a jazz section.

It seemed to continue for quite a few years afterwards too.
They were distributed thru Polydor, so that really got the LPs into stores -
even tho the reps didn't know who any of these artists were.
I remember some women running back to record stores with copies of Song X
in hand screaming something like "What happened to Pat Metheny???!!!"
There was even a decent turnout to many of those 50th anniversary concerts
at Big Ears back in 2019.

I still like the original 10064 cover.
This album had such an enormous impact on me in so many ways.
Not only did I start adding more cymbals and "little instruments" to my percussion setup,
but the following year I begged to be taken to see them in Ann Arbor.

Yeah, Jarrett and Metheny were like rock stars for a few years.  Their albums were everywhere, and people outside the jazz world knew who they were.

10064 was not original.

Ahh, OK, that was the French release.
Yeah, the Prestige one is the one that I remember.
Probably easier to get then(?) - but, still, a great record and "experience."

It's funny. I don't even remember that French cover.
I could've been in Hegewisch or Rose Records and
saw it, noticed that I already had it, and put it back.
Original pressings probably didn't even cross my
mind back then. It was always the music. Still is.

Going for a shot of this

I always think that the cover has a hint of Diebenkorn to it, just a hint

Have them both on vinyl. Entered the jazz world thru this door. Stuck with it until it went smooth......  Dave Koz took me out. That is when I went back to the roots and have stayed there ever since. Almost never listen to these any more. Two of his better albums, IMHO. I also liked that one with the red and yellow cover: I forget the name. (As I like it, maybe????)

Currently listening to

Ella Returns To Berlin (UHQCD)
