Howard McGhee: Volume 2 / Tal Farlow Quartet - Blue Note: 6941335 - download | Presto Music

The Farlow bit. It was also his debut, Tal Farlow Quartet. In this release the McGhee and the Farlow sessions are tied in.

Yes, I think there was two Howard McGhee albums, where one of the sidemen was featured with his extra group. One was a classic vintage bop session with some top bop musicians like J.J. Johnson and Max Roach I think, and some Kenny Drew trio at the end.

the vol. 2 is a bit strange. It sounds different, much more melancolic, maybe if I remember right, the first tune was some stuff in C minor, right ? It´s not as intense as his group on Vol. 1. but very fine music. The tracks without Maggie with two guitars, bass and drums are a bit strange and unusual for me. It´s more focused on guitar virtuosity I think.....

The Jef Gilson Nonet feat. Jean Louis Chautemps – New Call From France (SABA, 1966)

R-822468-1317173069.jpg

First listen to this, which was referenced in the recent MPS / SABA thread.

The musicians in the nonet are:

Bass – Gilbert Rovère

Bass Clarinet – Claude Lenissois

Drums – Gaëtan Dupenher

Piano – Jef Gilson

Tenor Saxophone – Pierre Caron

Tenor Saxophone, Alto Saxophone – Jean Louis Chautemps

Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone – François Jeanneau

Trumpet – Jean Baptiste Mira

Vibraphone, Percussion – Bernard Lubat

I'm surprised not to know any of the players on the record other than Gilson.
