Last weekend, they held a concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Concord Jazz Festival.  The festival itself died out in 2004.  Here was the bill of fare offered:

Certainly not much there which really shouts "Concord Jazz".  Poncho Sanchez has a legitimate ongoing relationship with the label and knew founder Carl Jefferson.  Chick Corea has a relationship with the post-Jefferson era of the label, so that kinda makes sense.  The Patti Austin with the Count Baise Orchestra sounds like the kind of thing Mr. Jefferson might have enjoyed.  Perhaps Jazzmeia Horn too.  Esperanza Spalding (there but for that Grammy, she might have been in that dreaded 4 PM slot) seems like stretching it a bit for a guy whose favorite bassist was Ray Brown.  But Dave Koz just seems like a crass slap in the face to the memory of Carl Jefferson, who founded that very jazz festival 50 years ago as a means of presenting the kind of mainstream jazz he liked!

Anyway, I listened to Disc 1 of this 2 disc set:

That's more of what Carl Jefferson had in mind.

Bill Heid - Blues on the Road: I didn't rip this when I first bought it at a Heid gig a few years ago and I am finally getting around to giving it a spin.  After picking up his Dark Secrets today, I looked him up and found out that it is his 71st birthday.  Talk about timing!  Happy Birthday, Mr. Heid!
