Recordings from the stockpile made between 1970 and 1972.   Late-in-the-game brilliance.

No one could ever replace Johnny Hodges.  But Norris Turney's contribution -- especially with his flute -- on these late recordings (and others) is considerable.  ... It seems like Ellington really enjoyed having that new "flute color" in his palette.

This isn't the version I have, which I picked up from a library sale.  I need to find the second volume.

Having blood and guts for breakfast today, a notch up from eggs and sausage, and well appreciated as such.

Are these Capitol dates or also MGM's?

Four radio broadcasts aired 1955-1958, not on any Capitol or MGM albums (although studio versions of the same tunes are found there.

The personnel listings on this CD are not always correct. No latin percussion by Toots Thielemans or Johnny Rae - Rae plays timbales on the two tracks where Armando Peraza joins them. Drummers are not always listed correctly, considering Shearing's tour personnel.

My own CDR made from LP copies of these two albums.
