Drove to my Dad's this rainy gray day and on the way listened to the three Lafayette Gilchrist cds I have:

I really like these. Gilchrist reminded me right off the bat of Thelonious Monk in his approach to composition and arrangement and in some ways his piano playing. But there's elements that remind me of Mingus passion here in the arranging and playing of the horns, and also of Archie Shepp "New Thing" drama and presentation, with a dollop of grease and a side order of a tiny spoonful of creamy corn. Really digging these. . .need to get more.
