Mickey Tucker - Mister Mysterious (Muse, 1979)

Listening to this music, the first thing I notice: Cecil McBee is a badass. Phew!!! I dig.

... And not just McBee. The whole band is superb, and this is an excellent record.

What do you think of it, ghost?

I've not heard Origami Harvest, but I've enjoyed Akinmusire's other records.

It's an interesting record--I had to go after the first three tracks and am just now getting back to tracks 4-6.  Kool A.D.'s raps are hit-and-miss for me on it (there's one particular sexual refrain that seems gratuitous and that I could really do without) and I wish that there was more of Akinmusire's trumpet (I, too, am a fan), but I like the blend of string quartet and trumpet and (when they work) the vocal parts.  More a showcase for Akinmusire as a composer than anything else.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ghost. :tup

I know I'm repeating myself, but that's my all-time favorite solo Lacy recording. The first notes of the first track, Monk's "Shuffle Boil," always fill me with an intense sadness. Which is an enigma, since in Monk's hands it was always a bouncy, if off-center little piece.
