ghost of miles
The same Lawrence Brown Slide Trombone CD that got me thinking about favorite reissue series also brings this question to mind: what are some of your favorite Ellington-sidemen leader dates? One that comes to mind for me is Johnny Hodges With Billy Strayhorn and the Orchestra.
duaneiac
I like all of the albums that I have heard that were recorded by Johnny Hodges with Wild Bill Davis.
JSngry
Love Calls Tell It Like It Is Damn near every Johnny Hodges's record, going back to the 78s. Do Johnny Coles records count? Julian Priester?
jazzbo
I love Ray Nance appearances outside of the Ellington Orchestra as a leader or sideman. He was a huge talent!

Guy Berger
I think we have to disqualify Ben Webster from this thread?

Peter Friedman
This opens up a huge number of recordings. It includes all the possible sessions by Strayhorn, Ben Webster, Clark Terry, Ray Nance, Paul Gonsalves, Harold Ashby, Johnny Hodges, Shorty Baker, Cootie Williams, Cat Anderson, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown, Jimmy Hamilton, Tyree Glenn, Oscar Pettiford, Rex Stewart, Barney Bigard, Booty Wood, Julian Priester,Britt Woodman, Gerald Wilson, Rolf Ericson, Ake Persson, Johnny Coles, Benny Bailey,Bennie Green, Buster Cooper, and many others. This is a task that would require a lot of time to consider what would be my favorites.
Larry Kart
If it hasn't been mentioned: "Cootie and Rex and the Big Challenge" (Jazztone), with Coleman Hawkins, Bud Freeman, Lawrence Brown, J.C. Higginbotham, and rhythm. As good as the lineup is on paper, it's better in reality.
catesta
Totally agree Larry. "Everybody knows Johnny Hodges" is a favorite of mine. I like this one too. Nothing earth shattering, just a good straight ahead big band.
clifford_thornton
Yeah, Gonsalves has a number of dates I really like. Gettin' Together on Jazzland is strong, and Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick on Vocalion is a scorcher. There's also a date he did with Tubby Hayes on Columbia UK, and Gonsalves-Ashby had a small UK group session with Ellingtonians that I've yet to hear ("Tenor Stuff," a Landsdowne LP). Ray Nance appeared on Ahmed Abdul-Malik's "Spellbound," an excellent date released by Status in the mid-60s (though I think it was recorded earlier).
