So go deal with an outfit whose shipping service you prefer and forgo access to what Mosaic offers. I'm not saying that Mosaic is perfect in their shipping service, but, as Steve says, they outsourced their shipping operations. Why? Probably because they thought they could save/needed to save money there in order to keep doing things that they thought of as more important to the overall quality of the operation. If so, then this wouldn't be "100% about shipping. Absolutely nothing else!" It would be about choices Mosaic probably made that you don't like and think were unwise. In that last, you may be right; we shall see. They will lose the business of some of their potential customers, such as you, who place a high value on shipping service but may continue to retain the business of customers who prize the quality of Mosaics sets and are prepared to put up with shipping service that is less than ideal.

I should add that I've never in all these years had a problem with Mosaic's shipping such as the ones you describe -- " lost orders, orders shipped to the wrong customer with said wrong customer either being instructed to simply keep the product, or return it at Mosaic's cost." Maybe if I had...
OTOH, when I ordered something from Presto Classical in England several years ago, my credit card info was nabbed somewhere along the way and used to set up a porn site in Eastern Europe at a cost of a good many thousand dollars. I did get the charges erased eventually, but that was not at all amusing. :)

I was wondering why I kept meeting Eastern European girls named Larry.

all seriousness aside, I just ordered the Strata East. I am something of the musical equivalent of Mailer's 'Left Conservative."  I love, from the clips I've heard, how these players were coming to terms with the 'freedom principle' while still retaining a feel heavily rooted in song form.

btw, I don't think their problems are being caused by the Gazette.

of course it's not a cause for the problems, it's just a strong indicator that they misperceive the problems... for instance: if you have a high quality product to sell (which they do) you don't advertise that one to me with a freebie that I could recreate in higher quality in 25 minutes max.  I don't hate anyone and I actually like Mosaic quite a bit... I'm just trying to help, knowing that if I post something valuable here it will find its way... and if not, then I probably didn't.

I had a very good experience with Mosaic customer service. I recently bought a Mosaic set. When it was delivered one corner of the box was crushed- probably due to USPS poor handling. Fortunately the CDs were OK. I called Mosaic (actually talked to a human) and told them of the problem. I received a replacement box within a week. Hats off to them!

Better packaging probably would have prevented such damage in the first place. They are always very friendly and generous in solving such issues, but that's beside the point. Quality control and prevention is what's lacking.

@Stonewall (and others in a similar situation): Of course that's good follow-up and quite commendable;). But wouldn't it be better still if they used bullet-proof packaging in the first place to avoid all this to and fro and replacement mailing etc. to EVERY extent possible? If you figure in this extra outly this means to THEM then this cannot possibly improve their bottom line either. AGAIN this seems to boil down IMO to straightening out the shipping department.

As of today, 10 of the 26 sets Mosaic has on its website are either running low or last chance.  A few are currently on back order.  Several have said it above or in other threads, but this has all the looks of a going out of business sale.  I'll be curious to see how soon many of the sets that were recently back ordered and recently repressed   (e.g. Mingus, JPJ, Savoy) - hit the last chance list.

Just got the notice that the JPJ and Mingus sets are coming my way and am glad that they - along with the Savoy, were repressed.  Not much action on the coming attractions front.  I know of the Edwards set, but don't know the status.  I'd be happy if they went to a subscription thing or a reduced output/packaging change/whatever if there is still interest on their part.  If not, it's been a great run...

I wonder if Jazz Messengers will get the JPJ box set in stock again.

They told me they will (and also the Clifford Jordan), but they will be closed for a summer break until late August (it's very hot in Spain).

If they were going out of business, they wouldn't be planning a Teddy Wilson set for early next year. Which Edwards are you referring to?

Which Edwards? Seriously?

Yes, seriously; I'm not an American and I have no idea whose photo that is. Maybe I missed something, but I also have no idea which Edwards Mosaic set Ed Swinnich was referring to.

Douglas Edwards: a "vintage" CBS news reporter. ;)

I guess I'm on ignore for previous misdeeds (which is fine with me)... but be that as it may: I think jsngry just wanted to underline/emphasize your question and did so with a funny picture... (I didn't get that joke either...)

imho (and maybe I missed something) either "Edwards Mosaic" is a typo (most likely in "Edwards") or it means "Teddy Edwards Mosaic" which could be fairly exciting... (The legendary session with Don Sleet and Daniel Jackson playing Ornette recorded by Lenny McBrowne's wife ?!?! and more...).
