Anthony Braxton - Solo (Pisa) 1982 (Golden Years, Leo)

Insanely good and better sound quality then the other two Braxton solo live recordings on Golden Years. For Alto is the classic, of course, but the Pisa album deserves to be counted among his best as well.

I suppose stringed instruments like the guitar or bass are a bit of a "cheat" because -- like pianos -- they offer harmonic possibilities that aren't open to one-note-at-a-time instruments like saxophones or trumpets.

My two favorite solo albums are:

Steve Coleman - Invisible Paths

and

Vinny Golia - Solo

Vinny's album "Clarinet" is also wildly entertaining, which I didn't expect for a clarinet hahaha.

Nate Wooley has quite a collection of solo trumpet recordings my favorite being "Wrong Shape To Be A Storyteller". Syllables 8 and 9 are quite good too.

William Parker "Lifting Sanctions" is excellent. Parker has a lot as well," Crumbling in the Shadows..." is a 3 disc box set that in the past was pretty cheap, $20 to $25, and I recommend that too

So many fine solo recordings and without even mentioning Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell (who each probably deserve a solo recordings thread to themselves), here's some great ones from my collection that get revisited often

Peter Brotzmann - 14 Love Poems [FMP]

Joseph Jarman - Sunbound Volume One [AECO]

Famoudou Don Moye - Sun Percussion Volume One [AECO]

Brother Malachi Favors Magoustous - Natural & Spiritual [AECO]

Arve Henriksen - Sakuteiki [Rune Grammofon]

Sabir Mateen - Ardla XXX [Rogue Art]

Jerome Cooper - Unpredictability Of Predictability [About Time]

Nicole Mitchell - Engraved In The Wind [Rogue Art]

I'll second the Gunter Sommer, Marion Brown, Vinny Golia and Steve Coleman mentions above
