I am very sorry to hear this news.

He was a leader indeed.

Crushing loss. I spent scarce little time with the man, but he left an indelible mark on my creative sensibility. The week or so he spent at Mills a little under ten years ago was one of the formative educational experiences of my entire life. I will absolutely never forget the duo concert he played with Roscoe the last night, which still figures among the most exciting nights of music I've ever had the privilege of experiencing.

Talk about a life changing life. Thank you for absolutely everything, sir.

Very sorry to hear this--just pulled out the Black Saint/Soul Note set and some of the Delmarks for revisiting.  Such an incredible artist.

RIP. He seemed full of life when I saw him in Ojai this Spring with Roscoe Mitchell.

The sad news keeps coming.

Fortunately I did get to see him in London leading a terrific nine or ten piece group.  Memorable.

Felt so lucky to have seen him rehearse and conduct an orchestra of some of the finest New York musicians last winter over two or three days. Truly a tremendous experience.

Tell us more! Was that a recording session?

Not that I'm aware of; the hope, I think, was that this would grow into a larger performance of Abrams' music but it never came to pass. They were open rehearsals, free for anyone who RSVPed. Pretty damn amazing. Saw Muhal a few other times, all wonderful but nothing like that.

RIP.  A giant.  I discovered a lot of his music over the past two years.
