Sopranos Season Starts!!!

Recommended Posts

I dozed off and on on this one. I took me half the show to realize it was Polly Bergen and not Nannette Fabray. The best part was the theme from the old Jackie Gleason Show that played over the closing credits. Lovely piece of music that has such a strong sense of time and place for me. Gleason had one very classy television show. BET on Jazz shows jazz clips from the Gleason show. Good stuff.

Overall a better episode than the previous two, in my opinion, but still lacking some real direction and punch.

Tony and the bullshit story about his father's girlfriend and JFK.

The business with Junior and the funerals was a bit odd, as well as Tony chasing down Phil Leotardo. What is Tony doing chasing down people for money anyways? (what happened to the rolling eyes smiley?)

Thay get me every time with the damn previews. <_<

This week's looks like a good one, I hope the writers deliver. B)

I liked last night's episode. I was starting to get worried about this show.

OK. Tony Blundetto is a cold killer and stupid too. Johnny Sack and Phil Leotardo are going to want Tony B. dead and Tony Soprano is caught between a rock and a hard place in regards to his cousin. Retribution means war between Johnny Sack and Little Carmine. I think it'll wind up with the Frankie Valli faction dead, and probably Tony B. Maybe Little Carmine.

Tony B., is making problems, the writing is on the wall, Johnny Sack is going to mess Tony (both of them) up before this thing is all over.

Christopher is all pissed off, that's not good, his old lady is going to try and make things good for him by running her mouth to the feds.

Is it just me, or is anyone else sick of Carmela?

What the hell was that thing with Vito?

I think they're trying to show Carmela backed into a corner with no options but to go back to Tony. She can't get a divorce lawyer, Tony's being cheap about the allowance,Tony's income is hidden, etc. That said, I could see where you might get tired of seeing it, but maybe David Chase is trying to show(slowly) the total disintegration of both of his families, with Christopher ticked, Tony B. going off the rails, Carmela making the divorce moves, etc. I think it would be drawn out, but Edie Falco is such a fantastic actress that I could watch that stuff for hours because of her acting ability.

The thing with Vito shocked me, I was sitting there saying, "Oh my God" over and over. There is a real life analog to him, though. The Sopranos is supposedly based on the DeCavalcante(sp) crime family in NJ, and one of their members was whacked for being gay. In fact, one of them is on trial now, and when asked what happens to gay mobsters, he replied, "They die."

Now Carmine & Johnny Sack are at war, and despite Tony's beat efforts to remain neutral he's right in the middle of it beacuse of Tony B.

I got a good laugh from the 'Johnny Peeps' headstone, and also Paulie Walnuts doing an about-face when he finds out the kid is Meadow's boyfriend.

Carmela's line to Meadow was a classic: "You've got options:I've got a lawyer"

Tony S. can't see that he's headed for a confrontation with Johnny Sack? He says to Tony B. he broke his back trying to remain neutral between Johnny Sack and Little Carmine then he proceeds to give Johnny Sack a song and dance to provide an alibi for Tony B. on the night of the Joe Peeps hit. Kind of contradictory. Might be flawed writing. If it's supposed to portray Tony's state of confusion It seems too far out of character to ring true.

Maybe Tony S. still feels so much guilt about not being there the night of the botched heist that jailed Tony B. that he's trying to protect him at all costs, even to the point of getting embroiled into a mob war. Tony S. also thinks of Tony B. more like his brother than his cousin. By placing family above business, Tony S. is digging himself a very deep hole.

the sopranos is about the most ironic show i have ever seen.

i do not pick up on it alot the first time through.

i only see alot of the irony on repeated viewings.

that said, i find it highly ironic that tony s. told tony b. - it's hard doing business with strangers.

he is now finding out how hard it is to do business with family.

No doubt, Paulie Walnuts is hilarious.

One thought about the thing with Vito was that they would indeed kill off his character, and Christopher would take over his crew.

I think the Carmela story is interesting about her being backed into a corner and ironic that she wants her fair share of the spoils from Tony's illegal activities. Tony was right when he told her she was fine being the lady of the manor when he was bringing in the money to her. She made a deal with the devil and now she's stuck. Her daughter doesn't even have sympathy for her.

I also find the story about Meadow's boyfriend Finn analogous to Carmela's situation. Backed into a corner. He knows he can't leave his job or his girlfriend or Vito will take him out. So to be protected, he has to stay so he proposes marriage.

Good episode last night.

As I remember it, the thought of Vito taking him out did get young Finn rattled. Of course in this case, it was Vito wanting to take him out to a ball game. ;)

Seriously, I could see Finn proposing marriage as a way of searching for protection.

It was the weirdest episode to-date. That's about all I can say about it.

What about that gambler junky from the last episode? What happened to him?

Isn't Tony B on parole? Where does he work? I'm sorry I just don't see this guy being a mobster, let alone a casino manager. He looks like a guy who did body-work on my car...

For chrissakes, buy Tony Jr. and Meadow some acting lessons. Or whack 'em.

Could not agree more about those two needed acting lessons.

I originally thought Buscemi was a good addition, but I think you're right, he's not very convincing in the role.

But that's the whole point. Tony S is guilt ridden that he had an anxiety attack and Tony B went to the big house. Tony B is a screw up you wouldn't want to touch your car but Tony S is dealing with his own demons.

Another coincidence in this last episode: when Tony S. has the panic attack and can't make the heist where Tony B. gets busted, he blames some --------(racial epithet I won't repeat) who jumped him. When Tony S. asks Tony B. why he's limping, Tony B. blames it on some -------(same thing!) who jumped him.

Well, as a representative of the (epletive deleted) group in question,

What's New?

(How is the world treating you?)

I've heard rumors it's our fault about that WMD thing, too.

The same excuse pops up a third time when the wiseguy crew on the no-work construction gig agree to use it when they call the ambulance for the guy who got beat up. It's a standard lick, which makes it difficult to decide if Tony B. was sticking it to Tony S. or just running the standard game.

Fourth time was when Amber mentioned the murder of her old boy friend by African-american drug dealers (she believes it, but it's till the same riff).

So that's four times in one episode, too many to be coincidental, I'd think. Is this a setup for further plot twists, a one-time highlighting of one of this subculture's traits, the writer making a political point, or just what?
