JSngry
...that was a slow blues and used quarter tone harmonies in the section work? Not sure it was released at the time or if it's an archive thing or what exactly. I thought I had it on my hard drive but don't. It's not "Headquarters", that's not it. It's a slow blues. Ring a bell with anybody?
JSngry
ok, my bad, it was Headquarters and it has nothing to do with a slow blues. It was the bridge I was thinking about, some really fucked up shit! I would like to hear something like I thought I was remembering, though. mikeweil
First track that comes to my mind is "Kansas City Blues", one of the live tracks from the "Autumn" album - that starts with a long solo by Frank Strozier. Would have to dig in deeper to find others ...
JSngry
Nah, it's "Headquarters", heard on You Tube (above) and now, on The Lost Tapes Vol 2. https://www.discogs.com/Don-Ellis-The-Lost-Tapes-Vol-2/release/12323088 It's that first bridge I was rememberng, and for some reason remembered it happening on a slow blues, a chromatic(quarmatic?) descent from the 1 down to the VI, but that's in no way what it actually is. Oh well...
mikeweil
Ordered a copy of the Lost Tapes Vol.2 last night after reading your question. It's great they get that stuff in circulation, and that BGO reissued some Columbia albums - the Wounded Bird reissues gor for big money, at least when I look for them. Plus, I have all the LPs.
