I've gone the last four years and have only had  good experiences, other than some rather cold weather and some snow. So far  I've been lucky in terms of snow not affecting any flights.

I haven't had any problems accessing venues, but I think some of the smaller venues (like the Zinc Bar) do get full. My approach is to mostly stick to the larger venues and not move around a lot. Some take the opposite approach of going from venue to venue after each  set. The largest number of venues the past three years has been at the New School, so I've mostly been in that vicinity.

The venues tend to be in clusters, some in short walking distance, others a bit further. Nublu (in  the West Village) was the furthest from the action.

One difference from  Big Ears is they don't turn the audience after every show, so you can find a good seat and have a sequence of  concerts in  one venue if you like. Also, the ticket prices for the Marathon are quite reasonable.

Soundwise,  it has been pretty consistently good.

I’m going to be in NYC that Sunday through Tuesday for the Jazz Congress and definitely plan on attending the Gary Bartz-Pharoah Sanders tribute to Another Earth.

I'm definitely going, but will miss that show, unfortunately. I'm sure it will be amazing. I'm only going to the 'marathon' on Friday and Saturday.

I should have mentioned  that it is a good idea to buy the Marathon pass in advance because they do typically sell out one or both nights.

The Gary Bartz concert has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 10, which is a bummer for me, because I'll no longer be in NYC at this point.  They quickly refunded my money, which I'll probably end up applying to the Monday, January 7 The Bad Plus/Terri Lyne Carrington/Terence Blanchard show instead.  Bartz was rescheduled because of a memorial tribute for Roy Hargrove taking place that same Tuesday night uptown at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.  I'll probably try to attend that as well.

Saw that, but bittersweet for me. I arrive that day, and already have commitments for Thursday night.

Only six of the ten venues carry over from last year. And the New School is not a part of the festival this year. It seems a bit more spread out this year, with more venues in the lower East Side.  I worked up my own tentative (revised) schedule:

Friday, January 11

6:40: Jamie Saft Quartet, Soho Playhouse

8:40: Mary Halvorson Code Girl, Sheen Center

9:40: Aaron Parks Little Big, Subculture

10:40: Artifacts Trio, Zinc Bar

12:20: Sarah Elizabeth Charles, Subculture

Saturday, January 12

6:00: Evan Christopher's Clarinet Road, Public Arts

7:00: Sisterhood of Swing, Sheen Center

8:20: Pocket Science (Gary Bartz, Kahil El Zabar, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Robert Irving), Sheen Center

9:40: Impressions of Pepper, Sheen Center

[9:20: Liebman, Rudolph, Drake, Subculture]

11:00: Amina Claudine Myers, Sheen Center

12:00: JD Allen Encounters David Murray, Subculture

1:20: Kassa Overall Trio with Mark Shim, Subculture

Pharoah + Bartz is now rescheduled for Jan. 10th, if not mentioned above. I am on the fence about going because WJF is something I've always avoided, but this seems like something worth seeing.

Bartz/Tacuma looks of more interest IMO.
