jeffcrom Posted February 15, 2019 Report Share Posted February 15, 2019 New Orleans cornetist Connie Jones died last night (February 13, 2019) at the age of 84. He was a "musician's musician" - barely known to the general public, but held in high esteem by his fellow Crescent City players. As Tom Piazza said in the notes for the album I will be recommending below, "All the serious traditional players of New Orleans show a special respect for Jones; something shifts in their tone when his name comes up in conversation." He's probably best known for his stints in a latter-day version of The Dukes of Dixieland and with Pete Fountain. I saw him a couple of times with Fountain, and always enjoy the recordings he appears on. I particularly recommend the 2007 duo recording with pianist Tom McDermott, Creole Nocturne, on the Arbors label.
