Dan Gould
My instinct is that Miles' open collar look puts it after Clifford's death.

Coda
Taken from The Lenox School of Jazz by Jeremy Yudkin There were two recordings made around the date of the photo. The Modern Jazz Quartet at Music Inn (Atlantic 1247), guest artist Jimmy Giuffre, recorded August 28, 1956 and The Concert at Music Inn (Atlantic 1298), recorded August 30th. Other guests at the Inn at that time include Herbie Mann, Pee Wee Russell, Rex Stuart, Teddy Charles, Oscar Pettiford, Quincy Jones, Willie 'The Lion' Smith, Ray Brown, Dick Katz and George Wein. There was also a panelist session with Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, & Dizzy Gillespie. MJQ was in residency. Funny, there's no mention of Miles. Bill Nelson
If Shecky, then it was prior to the beating he took in the parking lot. As Shecky tells it, Frank Sinatra came to his rescue, telling the henchmen, "Okay fellas, that's enough."

Who's the woman with her back to the photographer? She's overlooked. The photo was posted on a Facebook group run by Loren Schoenberg. The question was, "Does anyone know who is the guy on the left is?" It could by a non musician.
