Yes, his rhythm section from that period was the great Eric Gravatt, Novosel, and a pianist named Gene Rush, who fit his conception beautifully.  Not familiar with Rush apart from those early McNeill records.

'Asha' and 'Washington Suite' are the two you want, and they are fabulous.  'Asha' is a desert island disc for me.  'Tanner Suite' isn't really jazz, more classical-minded.
