French label, mostly early-mid 70s recordings of veteran Swing/Blues/Jazz players playing their collective asses off. Some of the best Arnett Cobb on record, Milt Buckner, Lockjaw, Bill Doggett, Gatemouth Brown, just a lot of really good no bullshit music of a certain vernacular, you'll not hear it played better. The clioset parallel might be the old Prestige Swingville/Bluesville series, only of the then-current scene. Can't say that it was ever widely available in America for any real sustained length of time. A wee bit of it made it to the US via the Inner Citty/MMO Classic Jazz imprint back in the 70s. I have vivid memories of a good buddy of mine back then, a tenor player, discovering Arnett Cobb on one of those LPs, the dude was damn near literally seeing god.

I'm really struggling with this list to get it down something affordable and storable, my money is not infinite and my spaces almost exhausted, but there's that much good/great stuff on it. I've been blessed with friends who have shared some of it over the years, and my urge to buy it myself, legit, is strong. I'd not be feeling that with any halfass or okie-doke music.

The Definitive series was really great, with usually 3-4 unissued tracks and at least 1-2 new tunes, not alternates.  But its something of a discographical mess, I noticed yesterday, when one of the Cobbs came out on CD they added three tracks but the Definitive version has other bonus material.  Different group backing Arnett is surely the reason why but now I've got to figure out if those three bonuses on the 80s CD showed up somewhere else or are truly "orphans".

my god....so much gold there...

This will take awhile to go through. I've asked to see the French list.

Can someone explain why some of them are called "Definitive."

Definitive was the series of CD reissues with unissued tracks from the sessions. Original CD reissues (the first section of Tom's list) will not track exactly with the Definitive issue.

Sorry he isn't listing the Guy Lafitte sessions. They are my favorites on the label.

There is a 2016 release of new material:

1005 Guy Lafitte - Nice Jazz 1978 /  All tracks recorded at Nice Jazz Festival, 1978

Three tracks with Wig; three more with Wig, Sweets and Hank Crawford, two with Hank Jones and Sweets and one more with Sweets, Hank and Illinois Jacquet.

Hey Tommy, just emailed you my order.

This was a painful process, finally got it down to 24 items...if I was younger, less married, and had more shelf space than I do now, I'd take practically all of them.

Then again, if I was younger, less married, and had more shelf space than I do now, I could have only afforded, like, about 5 items.

Life is neither fair nor perfect, but considering the alternative, hey.,

I will get an order to you this weekend. I'm trying to avoid duplications with the various earlier CD editions of some of these titles, which is compilcated by packing for our upcoming move.

Subsequent "Definitive" releases often had different bonus material than the first round of CDs had.  Of course if you are not concerned with completeness I am sure one CD release covers the material as well as another.  Certainly it includes the master tracks that were actually selected for the LP issue.

Ugh.  Younger, married and with little space.  I am putting in my extravagant order for three discs.   Going with John Hardee, Sammy Benskin and Oliver Jackson.  I feel great about those choices, but it was hard not to go nuts with that catalog at those prices.
