I have this CD, but I think with another cover. Wasn´t it recorded in Leverkusen, Germany.

And there were stories About it, that Art Blakey initially didn´t want to perform with the guests. At some Point he left the drum Chair and Roy Haynes played.

I read an article About that concert then at Jazzpodium, this was before the CD was issued. It was told that at one Point Art Blakey went to the piano and played and sang "For All We Know". this item is not on the CD. At least not on mine.

A video of this event has been available online for many years.

Great lineup. It's unsatisfying, in that there are (as Charlie Mingus would have said) "too many friends" all lining up for their one brief solo chorus. A bit of a circus, really. I just read an interview with Teddy Wilson in which he said that he didn't care for concerts. But, it is an enjoyable curiosity.

didnt duke ellington start the whole 70th bday concert trend.   did stravinsky have one?  a few years ago it was happening for all my rock heroes (we're way past that now) but this is also an early example- awesome to see him get this recgnoition  And re: he didn't want to play w/ the alumni.......fine art wanted to do his present-show, i get it- but Benny saved his ass and there would be NO JAZZ MESSENGERS without Benny's involvement
