Xanadu Gold Series

Wondering what folks consider the cream of the crop for this series of archival recordings. Don't know if this discogs list is exhaustive or not

https://www.discogs.com/label/220318-Xanadu-Gold-Series

Considering the artists and time frames seems hard to go wrong but if anyone has advice on the "not to be missed" among them, thanks in advance!

Also, the J.R. Monterose is very special. It's since been made available on other labels, but still, one to know.

Isn't that one atypical because it is a straight reissue of an actual LP (JARO 5004) (as is the Kenny Dorham Memorial LP, for example), as opposed to many of the other reissues featuring compilationns of individual 4-tune sessions or releases of previously unreleased live recordings?

That Warne Marsh Live in Hollywood LP must be uncommon. I canntor ecal having ever seen it aynwhere (I would ahve picked it up ...9.

BTW, a question to the real experts: Is there a fundamental, overriding difference in the reissue programming between the gold Xanadu and silver Onyx LP series? The fields they cover do seem to overlap quite a bit, even if Onyx leans more towards the Swing era.

This one is a favourite of mine. Wardell Gray with Art Farmer and Hampton Hawes, they really stretch out here, one of the finest live bop sessions.

Agreed. And it goes (must go, actually) well with the performances on "Jam Session Record No. 101" (or SAJ 1003) recorded the same day at the same venue.

Yeah I had the Jam Session issue and recently found the Gold Series issue to combine. Not even sure yet of overlap I thought there was one repeated tune? Or actually I think the Jam Session issue isn't just Wardell, so its more like 1 1/2 LPs from that date.

Donna Lee is on both LPs and the Bruyninckx discography says Fine and Dandy (Keen and Peachy) is on both too but for the life of it ;) I cannot find this tune on my copy of Xanadu 146 (which has 7 tracks, not 8 as indicated by Bruyninckx).

Here are the tracks per discogs.  No Fine and Dandy.

Fresh Sound Records released a CD (CD-157) that included the 7 tracks from Wardell Gray Xanadu-146 LP plus 2 extra from the session- "Keen And Peachy" and "Lady Bird". The 2 tracks totaling 18 minutes were too long to fit onto an LP. These 2 tracks are on the Jam Session LP (JS-101).

I never heard about the jam session 101 record. From the same day you say ? Who´s on it ?

I think "Fresh Sound" was harder to purchase. From the Gold Series, my record dealer "Radio Kratz" always had some of them to sell……., well all this was 40 years ago.

Here´s another one, I purchased it especially for the fantastic sides with Fats and Coleman, the Dexter stuff I had already on Spotlite.

Off-topic, with respect to Xanadu Gold Series, but on-topic for Xanadu and Wardell Gray, there's nice early Wardell with the Earl Hines Orchestra on this one: https://jazzjupiter.blogspot.com/2017/09/swing-into-bebop-earl-hines-and-his.html

...alongside my old buddy Kermit "Scotty" Scott.

That one does not seem to be readily found today, if ever?

I still have access to whats left on vinyl

26 to 30 titles on vinyl and about 10 titles in storage I have to dig out.

Will post a list here if anyone is interested in the next few weeks.

I visited Don Schlittin a couple years ago and he is still storing them the same way for the last 20 years. Which means some items here and there are warped.

Isn´t this also from the Gold Series. The famous "Bud in Paris". It´s Recordings from late 1959/60, some of them with Barney Wilen ts added, which is a highlight. The 2 Bud-Griffin duets are misdated, this cannot be from 1960, it must be from 1964.

The cover Foto cannot be from Paris 1960, it must be Don Schlittens´ famous Picture of Bud when he returned to New York, I think the Foto was done still on the Airport.
