As someone who wasn't there, I'd be interested to know whether jazz fans at the time were actively chasing Blue Note in comparison to other labels of similar vintage like e.g. Prestige.

From the point of view of the '90s, when I started to listen to jazz, Blue Note was the king - it was the great era of reissues, hip hop tie ins (Guru etc.) and coffee table books. If there were Blue Notes crowding the bins in the mid 70s then I suppose that must not have always been the case.

There was definitely a BN mystique by 1977-78 when I started buying records in earnest. It was passed on to me by the hip cat who worked at the best local record store, my brother who was seven years older and into jazz and  picking up records by Dexter, Freddie, Herbie, Rivers, etc. on the label, and it was perpetuated by musicians in interviews and certain writers who, even if they didn't use these words exactly, clearly revered the label's track record.

I started buying jazz records in 1970-71. Blue Note was just another label as as far as I was concerned, and to be honest their covers looked weird! And the back covers even weirder! But when I got hipper to what was going on with the music, I began to seek out Blue Notes, not necessarily more than other labels but I knew there was something good there.

It wasn't until about 1976 or so, though, when the reissues from the vaults started coming out that I really started paying attention to just how much was there. At the same time Bob Belden, who was a very influential character in our circles, started pimping Blue Notes like you wouldn't believe and started coming up with all this obscure stuff that none of us at the time had ever heard of.

This is where the story really takes off! Bob did not have a car. And he had just found an old mom and pop store in South Dallas that was loaded with old Blue Note stock. He bought some, and wanted to go back the next day for more, but the guy who took him the last time was unavailable. And I had a car!

So off we went.

The place was loaded, not just with Blue Note but with so many different types of jazz records, only some of which I had ever heard of before.

So from that day forward, I learned my lesson - always look everywhere. Everywhere! It's a lesson that has served me well.

As far as Blue Note mystique, I think the experience I had is in line chronologically, mid to late '70s, with what a lot of people had, rediscovering the treasures that were on the verge of disappearing. Or so it seemed then. Nowadays, everybody's got CDs of it all. But before that happened, finding the LPs was equal parts musical revelation and good old-fashioned collector's thrill.

There was no internet and no Ruppli discography, so the prime sources of discovering what was in the BN catalog were old Schwann catalogs and the inner sleeves for other old BN albums, which were used to advertise other albums.  So you could be at Woolworth's or something in the dollar bin, and find a BN album that not only did you not own, but that you didn't even know existed.

Did I miss a link to the full (so far) list, I'm not going through the posts one by one to count but I'd be happy to from a single list.  And the Brnad/Shepp duet album is fine, it survived the purge of piano/sax duets that happened here awhile back but it's not my top favorite of that format either (the Shepp/Parlan are).

Go to his website and run through the  links for each month.  Much quicker than going back through these posts.  I'm also not a big fan of piano/sax duets, own very few that are standalone (have some in collections).

Blue Note inner sleeves

Can't recall if I mentioned this earlier, but I bought Sonny Rollins' "A Night at the Village Vanguard" in a cutout bin at a K-Mart store about a mile (as the crow flies) from my house.

Dang.  What a score!

My first job -- aside from cutting grass and watching kids -- was stocking shelves at K-mart.  Hardware and housewares.  I was 15.  Never saw ANYTHING that hip.

Happy to share the list (so far).

If folks discover any "new" music thru this project and it brings them enjoyment, then I'm glad. :)

Can't recall if I mentioned this earlier, but I bought Sonny Rollins' "A Night at the Village Vanguard" in a cutout bin at a K-Mart store about a mile (as the crow flies) from my house.

Best 1970s cut bin score for me: NY USA pressing of Big John Patton, Got A Good Thing Goin'.

I think for me it was a $1 (the whole store was $1 cutout LP's) Cobblestone LP of Jimmy Heath's "The Gap Sealer".  That one opened up new worlds for me.

I scored that one in the late 90s or early 2000s, for about $12 at a local store.  It was a good couple of years before the CD appeared and no one I was trading CDRs with had it at the time so it felt like an extraordinary score. But nothing like getting it sealed @ a cut-out price point.

Never saw any of those NY cutouts. The best I could find was $0.5 Cdn Applause LPs..;)

For me, Buster is at the other end of this particular spectrum.  Buster is NEVER stiff.  He's always limber.  And I don't mean rubber-bandy limber.  I'm talking flexible like a dancer's body.  I think that's why he's such a bad-ass with those Mwandishi ostinatos.  :)

Agreed ....

Love the Dyani.  Hard to choose just one Rivers but that is a good one.
