NOTE 1:
Here's a list of important artists and/or records that I didn't include in my survey.  I would have included these if I had compiled it using a objective/historical approach, rather than a subjective/personal one:

Roscoe Mitchell - Nonaah (Nessa) - Mitchell does appear on the AEC selection (Fanfare for the Warriors), of course

Tony Williams - (turn it over) (Polydor) - One of the most potent fusions of Jazz and Rock/Metal you'll ever hear -- but it's not a personal favorite

Don Cherry - Cherry shows up in the survey as a co-leader on Old & New Dreams (ECM) plus as a sideman on albums by Ornette & Johnny Dyani; the critical consensus pick, Brown Rice, has never really rung my bell, so I'm not sure which one I would choose as a "representative" or "historical" pick

James "Blood" Ulmer - Tales of Captain Black (Artists House/DIW) - for harmolodics; I can't use Ornette because I much prefer Science Fiction/Broken Shadows over titles like Dancing in Your Head, etc.

European avant-gardists like Alexander von Schlippenbach, Evan Parker, Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink, Willem Breuker, Peter Brötzmann, and others - for the most part, they're just not my cuppa.  That said, I recognize that these guys are important.  Just not so much to me.

NOTE 2:
In addition to the list of records included in my survey, I've also got a list of nearly 1,000 records that I chose not to include.  Either they didn't make my personal cut or I've never heard them.  (After all, there's only so much time and money.)  Incidentally, all of these records could be added to the existing survey while still maintaining the one leader/one co-leader rule.  I've added this "Other Records" list to my blog site.  If you'd like to see it, click here and scroll down.

So what say YOU???  :)

Thought you did a great job, and would like to see the "didn't include" list!  Thanks for a year of good entertainment, and I encourage you to do the 60's then the 50's next!  Off the top of my head, I would have included these (only 22 for a list of 366), but much of that is subjective, and does not negate the merit of the selections you made:

Bubby Hutcherson - Live at Montreux

Cannonball Adderley - Black Messiag

Gato Barbieri - El Pampero

Larry Coryell - Offering

Leon Thomas - In Berlin

Gary Bartz - I've Known Rivers

Carlos Garnett - Let This Melody Ring On

Jimmy Heath - The Gap Sealer

Clifford Jordan - Glass Bead Games

Jazz Contemporaries - Reasons in Tonality

McCoy Tyner - Sahara (or Enlightenment)

Woody Shaw - At Berliner Jazztage

Sonny Fortune - Long Before Our Mothers Cried

Archie Shepp - U-Jamaa (Unite)

Charles Sullivan - Genesis

Randy Weston - Carnival

Lloyd McNeill - Washington Suite

Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music

Art Blakey/Jazz Messengers - Gypsy Folk Tales

Max Roach - Live in Amsterdam

Jothan Callins - Winds of Change

Elvin Jones - Coalition

Great list, felser!  I almost included many of those LPs in my survey.

I know and enjoy all of your suggested records -- except for these:

- Jazz Contemporaries - Reasons in Tonality

- Jothan Callins - Winds of Change

I plan to look into those two, post haste! :)

Also, I've now posted the "Other Records" list -- LPs that I did NOT include in the survey -- on my blog. To see it, click here and scroll down.

What a project!  Many, many thanks.  I think this will greatly increase the appreciation of an unjustly-neglected decade.

Thank you, mjzee.  I'm glad you've enjoyed the project.  I have too!  :)

It's been a fascinating ride and I thank you for the effort put into this ... I can also say I ended up on what, an oh for 25 at the end? The end definitely had the longest streak of "I don't know these recordings at all" response by me.

As for the "other records" list I think it should be presented in trimmed down form to what could have made your list - because you didn't include anything in the past year you don't own, right?  So I would be more interested in however many of those that you do own and have heard. Not almost 1000 records that only fit the construct.

Thanks!  And as for the "oh-fer" on recent stuff...  No big deal.  Everyone's tastes and predilections are different. ;)

Sure.  I suppose I could do that.  You're right that it would be a much shorter list.

Let me ponder the idea a while...

I very much enjoyed following your blog this whole year.  Thank you.

Even though the 1970s was when I first started really listening to jazz, there were quite a number of things I didn't know.  The first two jazz LPs I ever bought were included, "Fanfare for the Warriors" and "Crystal Silence".

This was an excellent project HutchFan. It was a lot of fun to see what you selected each week and add my own thoughts.

Would be highly pleased if you started a new series such as  Reflections of Jazz in the 60's or Reflections of Jazz in the 80's.

Once I have some time I will share some recordings I would have included.

Dan,

This isn't exactly what you asked for -- but here's a shorter list of "Other Records."  I almost included these in my survey.  In fact, all of these were on the list at one point or another -- but they eventually got bumped to make room for something else.  I guess you could call these "Honorable Mentions" :

  • George Adams - Paradise Space Shuttle (Timeless)
  • Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt - Together Again for the Last Time (Prestige)
  • Benny Bailey - Grand Slam (Storyville)
  • Bayeté [Todd Cochran] - Worlds Around the Sun (Prestige)
  • Louie Bellson Big Band - Dynamite! (Concord)
  • Bob Berg - New Birth (Xanadu)
  • Paul Bley/Jimmy Giuffre/Bill Connors - Quiet Song (IAI)
  • Ruby Braff-George Barnes Quartet - Live at the New School (Chiaroscuro)
  • Benny Carter - Montreux '77 (Pablo)
  • Michael Carvin - The Camel (SteepleChase)
  • The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band - Off Limits (Polydor)
  • Julian Dash - A Portrait of Julian Dash (MJR)
  • Walter Davis, Jr. - 400 Years Ago, Tomorrow (Owl)
  • Walt Dickerson - Peace (SteepleChase)
  • Claudio Fasoli/Franco D'Andrea - Jazz Duo (Dire)
  • Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino - Concepts in Unity (Salsoul)
  • George Gruntz - The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band (MPS)
  • Glen Hall - The Book of the Heart (Sonora/Koch)
  • Johnny Hammond - Breakout (Kudu)
  • Eddie Harris/Les McCann - Second Movement (Atlantic)
  • Louis Hayes/Junior Cook Quintet - Ichi-Ban (Timeless)
  • Billy Higgins - Soweto (Red)
  • Eric Kloss/Barry Miles - Together (Muse)
  • The Steve Kuhn/Sheila Jordan Band - Playground (ECM)
  • Prince Lawsha [Lasha] - Firebirds Live at Berkeley Jazz Festival, Vol. 1 (Birdseye)
  • Ramsey Lewis - Them Changes (Cadet)
  • Didier Lockwood - New World (MPS)
  • Machito Orchestra - Fireworks (Coco)
  • Ray Mantilla - Mantilla (Inner City)
  • Bobby Naughton/Wadada Leo Smith/Perry Robinson - The Haunt (Otic/NoBusiness)
  • Charlie Palmieri - Impulsos (Coco)
  • Barre Phillips - Mountainscapes (ECM)
  • Jimmy Raney/Doug Raney - Stolen Moments (SteepleChase)
  • Mike Richmond - Dream Waves (Sonet/Inner City)
  • Terje Rypdal - Odyssey (ECM)
  • Lonnie Smith - Live at Club Mozambique (Blue Note)
  • Raul de Souza - Colors (Milestone)
  • Leon Spencer, Jr. - Louisiana Slim (Prestige)
  • John Taylor - Decipher (MPS)
  • Ralph Towner - Solstice (ECM)
  • Michael White - The Land of Spirit and Light (Impulse)
  • Joe Zawinul - Zawinul (Atlantic)
  • Attila Zoller - Common Cause (Enja)

If I could make one change to the survey today, now that it's all done, I would add Michael White's The Land of Spirit and Light.

Just don't ask me which one I'd remove to make it fit.  ;)

I do like that Michael White, and the Walt Dickerson.  I'd also make room for one of John Klemmer's Impulse albums.

Yeah, this one is pretty good.  I'm not as familiar with Klemmer's other Impulse LPs.

I dig the cover art.  :)  Very much "of its time" (as is the music).   . . . And I don't say that disparagingly.

this one is also quite good, with the same caveats.  The other two, "Constant Throb", and "Intensity", are also worthwhile.

Jazz Contemporaries - Reasons in Tonality

felser,

I didn't realize that Jazz Contemporaries is essentially the same group as Keno Duke/Contemporaries.  I'm familiar with the latter group's records (via YT).  From what I've heard, I'm partial to Sense of Values.  Frank Strozier!

Hopefully, a some outfit will get around to reissuing them -- both Reasons in Tonality and Sense of Values. Otherwise, I won't be buying either LP anytime soon. They fetch astronomical prices in the re-seller's marketplace. Zowee!

Pure Pleasure has been reissuing lots of Strata-East titles.  Maybe they'll get to these two?  Pure Pleasure's reissues are not cheap (and they only do vinyl), but at least they're not $100 or more -- like the original Strata-East LPs.

I've plopped for a couple Pure Pleasure Strata-East reissues:  Harold Vick's Don't Look Back and John Hick's Hells Bells. I like the music so much that I "bit the bullet" and paid about $40 each for them.  I'm glad to have them.  :)

Do you have an original Strata-East Reasons in Tonality

I haven't followed the blog as assiduously as others or as I should have but I've dipped in most months and have found it a fascinating read.  Thanks for all your hard work even if it is a labour of love.

This thread has been great too for other recommendations that have merged out of the discussion.

No, I did at one point in my life, and had I managed my vinyl differently, I'd be a richer man today :-).  I have a burn of it.   George Coleman, Clifford Jordan, Julius Watkins, Harold Mabern. Larry Ridley, and Duke.  Quite a group, stretching waaay out in two 20+ minute cuts.  I had this up as my last "album of the week" here many years ago, and got zero bites on discussing it, even though it is a fascinating document of Jordan, Coleman, and Watkins travelly well outside of their normal territory.  A reissue would be most welcome.

These two combined get you the title cut.  The other cut is nowhere to be found on youtube:
