CD Baby Store Closing - Recommendations?

Surprised nobody has posted about this

You've purchased music from CD Baby, so we wanted to let you know: we've decided to retire our CD Baby music store on March 31st, 2020 in order to fully focus on our distribution, monetization, and promotion services.

As explained in our message to our artists, the store is no longer a money-maker for most of our artists, as a growing number of listeners now get their music through streaming platforms, and those who prefer CD & vinyl are shopping on Amazon.

However, we ARE continuing physical distribution through our wholesale partners, including Amazon. The CD Baby artists you love will still have their CDs and vinyl for sale on online retailers and through record stores. And of course we're also continuing distribution to digital platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

What you need to know:

  • We are retiring wishlists along with the store, so please copy and paste those into another document.
  • Your Order and Download History will remain in your account. You can still log into your customer account and view your past purchases and redownload digital orders.
  • The Find and Order/Download function will also still work as it does currently.
  • Download cards will still work. Though the function will continue after the main store is retired, we recommend you redeem any codes you have now.
  • The Manage Credit Card and Manage Addresses sections will be removed to ensure the security of your information.

Lastly, we're offering our famous one-cent shipping deal on three or more CDs through March 31st. So if you've been eyeing a few albums on your wishlist, now's the time to buy 'em!

If you have any questions about our store retirement or your customer account, please check out our Help Center. Thank you again for your business over the years, and for supporting the music of independent artists.

So I am thinking about one last order to take advantage of the penny shipping. Any recommendations?

Here's a good one, led by George Bohannon with Sweets, Ray Brown and Wig:

Osian Roberts/Steve Fishwick Quintet hit a nice hardbop groove, derivative but rather nice:

This one is fine too, and with Shelley Carrol:

I'm sure there are more I bought but those are two I'd recommend if you like physical product. What about you?

Nothing like those, but there's a buttload full of Teo Records releases of Teo Macero's music still on there. It's an eclectic lot, to put it mildly, but much of it is quite good.

I was especially taken with this one: https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/teomacero17

the more "historically minded" would do well to get this one: https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/teomacero13

aka https://www.discogs.com/Teo-Macero-Featuring-Art-Farmer-Bill-Evans-Lee-Konitz-Ed-Shaughnessy-Mal-Waldron-Al-Cohn-Charles-Min/release/8789855+

I bough almost all of them at one point, jsut out of curiosity. It's a mess, but the music is never less than quite solid, and often enough, pretty damn good. And I doubt that any of it is going to be available in any other form for quite a while, if ever.

I'd jump on "Blues For The Fisherman" if you have any interest in Art Pepper: https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/artpepper13

This one caused a stir a few years ago: Walter Namuth Quintet: Left Bank '66 (Featuring Mickey Fields): https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/walternamuthquintetfeatm

Their site's layout is terrible.  You can't even get an alphabetical list of all jazz artists.

I bought a lot from CDBaby long ago. Their site wasn't my favorite and they changed how you can search about 5-8 years ago and I really stopped using it. I did get this email and thought how surprising it was they still we in the cd game. I did enjoy their whimsical emails telling you they shipped your order.

The backstory on those emails, from the guy who wrote the copy for them:

The most successful email I ever wrote

Great stuff, thanks.  Here is the text of the shipping emails for those not inclined to open the link:

Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure it was in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of Portland waved “Bon Voyage!” to your package, on its way to you, in our private CD Baby jet on this day, Friday, June 6th.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did. Your picture is on our wall as “Customer of the Year.” We’re all exhausted but can’t wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!
