RIP Laurie Morgan

7 posts in this topic

Probably not well known outside UK but Laurie Morgan was key in spreading the bop message in England, and was the last surviving member of Club XI, the collective (which included Ronnie Scott) that established modern jazz over here in the 40s. He ran regular jam sessions until fairly recently.

Stalwart of the ‘New Departures Quartet’ as well with Wellins, Tracey and Clyne.

Plus one of the first British musicians to check out 52nd st. and return with a valuable stack of bop 78s to spread the message.

R.I.P. Mr Morgan.

R.I.P.

Sounds like she really was an important personality in spreading the bop message in UK. And that club must have been interesting.

She?

oh I see, I had thought Laurie is a female name (like the wife of the late Art Pepper, Laurie).

Probably shortened from Laurence. Female ‘Laurie’ use tends to be more of a North American thing.
