Dave James
This video was included in the March 8th edition of the Mosaic Records Jazz Gazette. It's a film of the Ellington band from 1950 rehearsing very informally in what appears to be an outdoor setting. When Duke begins to clap around the 1:50 mark, he's off the beat. This is something I expect to see in audiences populated by folks who couldn't locate the beat if their lives were on the line, but not Duke. Should I be concerned? Am I overreacting? Am I required to report this to the authorities?
hopkins
I would harldy call this a rehearsal - seems to be a staged photo opp - but to answer your question, I would say the musicians are off beat, not the Duke
