Chico Freeman
FREE Livestream
Saturday February 27
2:30PM NY | 7:30PM London | 8:30PM Zurich
from
Moods, Zurich Switzerland

On Saturday, February 27, join Chico Freeman Group on Chico's Facebook Page and JazzCorner's Facebook Page for an exciting and compelling concert from Moods in Zurich, Switzerland. The Chicago native, has been in lockdown in Switzerland since early 2020 and this is his first major performance since then.

Saxophonist, composer and producer, Chico Freeman is always on the lookout for new ways of expressing himself in order to continue the legacy and tradition of jazz in a new guise. For this performance at Moods, he gathered a handful of outstanding musicians with different musical backgrounds: Amine M’Raihi is celebrated as a unique and innovative oud virtuoso, Jim Hart is considered one of the most inventive vibraphone players of his generation, bassist Emanuel Schnyder and drummer Luigi Galati provide the rhythmic foundation along with multi percussionist Alberto Garcia Navarro. Together they play music by Chico Freeman and by former companions, always looking for new approaches.

That livestream was fantastic!

Dick Hyman Etudes for Jazz Piano (In the Styles of the Great Jazz Pianists)
Aaron Copland Piano Blues No. 4
Mary Lou Williams Zodiac Suite

☆  ☆  ☆  ☆  ☆  ☆  ☆

"It’s only March, but the “Zodiac Suite,” written in 1945 by the composer and jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams, is already enjoying a momentous 2021," says Sunday's New York Times, and we agree! Regardless of the arrangement, performances of this major work point to "the quality and artistic farsightedness of a musician that Duke Ellington once complimented as being “perpetually contemporary.”"

“While having witnessed and been involved in the early phases of jazz development,” Aaron Diehl says, Williams “continuously challenged audience expectations of who she was — her identity as a Black American woman. She was just as critical a figure as her male colleagues — somebody like Duke Ellington. But she didn’t get the credit she deserved.” Discover this outstanding work tonight!

MOKE SCREENS PRESENTS: THE SULLIVAN FORTNER TRIO

primary-Sullivan-Fortner-Trio-1470933046-400x267

FRIDAY APRIL 2 - SATURDAY APRIL 3 / LIVE STREAMED / 8PM EST

Sullivan Fortner (piano)
Adam Olszewski (bass)
Kayvon Gordon (drums

“Fortner’s remarkable accompaniment helps to bring the song from a dreamlike hush to a dramatic, impressionistic instrumental peak and back.”
– Rolling Stone

Sullivan Fortner leads his trio in two nights of livestreaming concerts. For the past decade, the Grammy Award-winning artist has been stretching his deep-rooted talents seeking connections among different musical styles that are at once deeply soulful and wildly inventive. The New York Times says, “Sullivan Fortner, a pianist born in New Orleans, has an extravagant amount of talent and a hyperactive flow on the keyboard. He mixes chords and crossing patterns and two-handed unison lines, all at a rapid clip. Sometimes he’ll play with both hands right around the center of the instrument, but you’ll swear that he’s using every key. At other times, he really is.”

Event Information

Sona Jobarteh: A continuing story.

About this Event

This documentary will chart the life and career so far of Sona Jobarteh, educational pioneer, dedicated humanitarian, and the first female member of a Griot family to play the traditional West African kora.

Sona’s rise to the global attention of music-lovers and politicians alike has been inspired by her single-minded approach to achieving her goal – to bring education, self-respect, awareness and understanding of Gambian tradition, music and culture to the young people of her home country.

Now dividing her time between London, her ever expanding academy in The Gambia and the music venues and festivals of the world, Sona’s journey is told in her own words and those who know her the best, including her band members, music journalists and her family.

Her music is uniquely poised between the preservation of her rich cultural heritage and an accessible, modern style that relates to the current era and to audiences from all over the world.

This film will be screened as part of a unique evening with Sona Jobarteh.

Sona Jobarteh – A Continuing Story will be broadcast as a PPV via a digital platform on Saturday 10 April 2021, along with previously unseen live performances and a hosted live Q&A session.

In winter 2020, the Mdou Moctar band met up in Niamey, the capital of Niger, to record a few songs in anticipation of the release of, Afrique Victime (May 21st on Matador Records). We were staying on the outskirts of town at a friend's home. One day, we quietly set up in front of the house to film a few songs. Despite our relative isolation, the noise of the band inevitably attracted a crowd. What started as the four of us simply playing a few songs for a camera turned into a three-night run of rowdy concerts, bringing in hundreds of eager listeners. Each night, kids from all over the city would line up at our door, rushing over after their final evening prayer. These performances were completely spontaneous and wholly unplanned. Thanks to the audience in Niamey, we were able to capture the spectacular energy of a typical Niamey concert for you. We're thrilled about it and hope you will be, too. Enjoy!
