What's "the studio version"?

Apologies, was thinking of another board thread re "Asphalt Jungle" when I posted that.  I meant as opposed to the live versions to be found on The Great Paris Concert and In The Uncommon Market.  Derrick Bang's book on movie/TV crime and spy jazz from 1950-1970 mentions Ellington recording a three-part version, "The Asphalt Jungle Suite," and then the subsequent 45 that included "Asphalt Jungle Twist" on the b-side.  All of this makes me wish yet again that Mosaic would do completist justice to the Sony-owned Ellington catalogue from 1947-52 and 1956-62.

I would be very happy if Mosaic did this.

A minimum of 25 cds if they included the live things such as the Newport albums. The '47-52 would be six cds all by itself.

Right, it would definitely have to br two sets, and I wasn’t envisioning live material being included in a 1956-62 box. I could swear Scott said at one point a few years ago that they were looking at a possible late 1940s/early 50s Columbia collection, but that seemed to give way to the 1920s/30s Sony-owned overview they were considering. I’ll ask him about all of this tomorrow if I get him on the phone for an Armstrong pre-order.

I've managed to get hold of a lot of the 47-52 material. It's not all great.

Agreed--I have most of it too, after having bought the French CBS CD set that came out a long time ago in addition to the domestic reissues that Sony did in the late 1990s.  But I'd still bite on a Mosaic treatment, Ducalist that I am.  And there's plenty of good material as well.  Actually--not in terms of a Mosaic, though--I find myself lately favoring a number of live recordings from this era, like the 1948 Carnegie Hall date.

(volume 2 is not on the Internet Archive site)

EDIT: my mistake, you mention 47-52, and these are from 1943 and 1945...

Maybe it grows on one over the years (I've been listening to these sides from the CBS France set about 30 years) but I really like nearly all of this stuff, such variety, lots of humor.
