bebopbob
I received an email today that the 2020 Marlboro Music Festival has been cancelled this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year would have marked the 70th season. Although wise and prudent, the cancellation will surely create a void for chamber music patrons this summer. In lieu of the festival, perhaps Sony Classical will issue a box set of the Complete Music from Marlboro recordings that appeared on Columbia/CBS Masterworks from the late 1950s to the late 1970s with replicas of the original album jackets displaying the beautiful Vermont landscape and classic photos from the festival. Although the more popular recordings with Rudolf Serkin and Pablo Casals were issued on CD in the early 1990s in celebration of the 40th season, there remains many recordings that deserve proper CD issue including sone that have been issued only as CDR pressings from ArchivMusic - in addition, there’s a late 1970s LP of recording of Hummel’s Piano Septet / Boccherini Cello Quintet that has never been issued on disc (CD/CDR) to my knowledge. Perhaps such a set would also include the recordings from Marlboro Music Records which were issued in generic grey covers with orange lettering. Wishful thinking or maybe there’s someone out there in Sony Classical reading this that can make this happen!
