Jazz guys named Sonny

Milestones

Recommended Posts

If Sunny Murray is included, then include Sunny Clapp (also refered to as Sonny here and there) too ;)

And then, moving into other periods of jazz that otherwise tend to get overlooked: :D

Sonny Burke

Sonny Dunham

- and Sonny Boy WILLIAMS too!

And not to forget

Sonny Thompson

I like that Dallas/Plano tenor player "Sonny" Sangrey.

He died, you know. Self-inflicted mental wounds.

In some circles (corners, actually), rumor has it that he faked his own death. But until you see him in the flesh, actually playing...don't believe them rumors.

Unfortunately, the man is all but forgotten today, but Stan Getz had a younger brother -- Sidney, aka "Sonny" -- who tried to pursue a career as a jazz trumpet player.  He was a pretty good musician, but due to a combination of personal demons and standing in the shadow of his more famous sibling, his career never really took off.  There appears to be no recorded legacy of his musicianship, but his playing impressed quite a few people back in the day -- so much so that some one even wrote a song in honor of his musical talent.  Perhaps you have heard of "When Sonny Getz Blew". :w
