This discography of the earliest part of Dave Brubeck's recording activities is a side product of my research on Cal Tjader, who played in Brubeck's Trio and larger bands. It corrects several errors as to the identity of the drummer on the first Octet sessions and different versions of some Trio tracks. Thanks to board member chewy for his info on the lacquer disc he found, and to James Harrod for his fantastic research (http://jazzwestcoastresearch.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-dave-brubeck-trio-fantasy-records.html).

In a down beat interview in 1966, Cal Tjader stated he joined the Brubeck Octet in 1948 and "maybe Joe Dodge" was the drummer before him. However, interviews with Iola Brubeck and studies of photos and newspaper reports give evidence that Dick Saltzman played on the first Octet sessions. All discographies and issue credits listing Tjader on earlier Octet sessions were copied from the first release on Fantasy that simply assumed the personnel was identical to that of the later sessions. In fact it was a septet, and Bob Cummings played alto sax (Paul Desmond joined the group only at the next session, and trombonist Bob Collins in 1948). Dave Brubeck gave these recordings to the label to complement Fantasy's later recordings of the Octet.

d. titled "Indiana" on all issues.
This session was originally recorded by and issued on the Coronet label, the records were manufactured by the Weiss bothers' pressing plant. They bought the masters after Coronet went out of business; as orders for the records kept coming in, they seized the opportunity to start their own label, Fantasy, with the next Brubeck trio sessions, but kept the Coronet master numbers for the first four issued tracks.
Some performances are contained in a test pressing in James Harrod's collection; it has four breakdowns of Idaho on one side and four complete takes of four tunes on the other, without talking or studio chatter. The take of Laura on this test pressing proves to be identical with the one released on the Coronet 78. Furthermore, Tarik Townsend commented on Harrod's blog that the takes of Laura and Tea For Two on the Coronet or Fantasy 78s and the Fantasy LPs are different, which I confirmed by aural comparison. All this leads to the conclusion that more than the four originally issued tracks were recorded at this first Brubeck Trio session, despite the anecdotic report that the group had to record them to acetate disc under extreme time constraints (after the newly acquired tape recorder had failed to run at constant speed). Another possibility is that there was more than one session held in September 1949.
The identity of the vocalist on the test pressing is uncertain; Dave Brubeck suggested it might be Barbara Ritchie, who worked at NBC in San Francisco at the time; Frances Lynne reportedly sang with the Brubeck Octet; see Harrod's blog [http://jazzwestcoastresearch.blogspot.de/2012/10/the-dave-brubeck-trio-fantasy-records.html] for details and to listen to these recordings. There is one other recording by Ritchie for comparison which features an audibly different voice (see next session), and only very few by Lynne which have not been available to me for audition, but due to the different sound of the voices I opt for Lynne on this session.

This is from a 12" 78 rpm lacquer disc a private collector found at an auction labelled "Dave Brubeck 1/2/1950". It also includes interview segments  with Brubeck and two big band tracks (not Brubeck related). The singer is identified by the announcer (possibly Jimmy Lyons) as "our Barbara Ritchie", who worked at KNBC at the time. https://youtu.be/jxnmBF-znhc
Tjader's drumming on the first track imitates tap dance rhythms.

The unissued 30 April 1950 session at Mills College is a tremendous find. Hopefully a tape will show up. As a long-time Brubeck collector I would love to have a CD of this session.

I doubt there is a tape. See James Harrod's blog for details: http://jazzwestcoastresearch.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-dave-brubeck-trio-fantasy-records.html
