Ted Gioia article on ECM

Recommended Posts

cliff,

Thanks for sharing that ECM article by Ted Gioia.

I'm not particularly drawn to much of the music that Eicher's label has released -- but you've gotta give props to the guy for sticking to his vision.  He's been doing it for a LONG time.

... Also, the joke that ECM stands for "excessively cerebral music" made me laugh.  Hadn't heard that one before. :P

I probably like ECM more than the average jazz fan and it is an interesting/impressive body of work, but imho that article felt a little too hagiographical.

Yeah, I mean, "jazz"... what does that have to do with ECM? ECM is a record label run by one guy who records stuff he likes. Sometimes it's "jazz", sometimes it's not. Who cares?

Especially in 2021, who cares? Tell me, who cares? "Jazz" is a product now, not real life. What little real life is left is going to be dead soon. What will be left is career strategies. That's mostly what there is now anyway.

Sorry, but this  article misses the point altogether. Should have written it about ECM music, not ECM jazz. Would've been a helluva lot more relevant story.

Gioia's career strategy is Jazz Writer.
