I like the Alan Shorter suggestion a lot. Also Charles Tolliver would have worked, was already recording adventurous records with Jackie McLean. Rabshakeh
Maybe Clifford Thornton then? I'm counting Ben Dixon put on account of the fact that it doesn't really feel like it's his vibe.
Д.Д.
Trumpeters who would have worked better on Ascension could be Manfred Schoof and maybe Jacques Coursil - but probably a couple of years later than 1965.
mikeweil
Why not Don Cherry?

clifford_thornton
Bill Dixon would've been awesome on Ascension though I can see why, in theory, he's not there. Thornton and Shorter make a lot of sense and certainly could've been on it. Simmons knew Coltrane, as did Lasha, so I suppose it could've worked out if they were in New York at the time of the recording. The only player I know of who was asked and demurred as far as being on Ascension was Frank Wright, though there might've been others as well. clifford_thornton
Correct. He would've been quite something in that context.
colinmce
There are innumerable 'what ifs' when it comes to Coltrane but it's not hard to imagine the Rev sliding into Pharoah's spot in the group later in the 60s. John/Alice/Frank/Jimmy/Rashied/auxillary percussion circa 1969 ... the mind reels!
