DMP
Can’t recall the original contents of the album from the concert, but, besides a CD reissue of the album, several of the tracks have shown up as extra tracks on other issues (John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp). Are the Charles Tolliver and Grachan Moncur tracks available anywhere else? Does the CD reissue duplicate the original LP?
JSngry
The CD does not duplicate the original LP. The extra Tolliver & Moncur cuts can be found on this LP: The original LP is: https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-New-Wave-In-Jazz/master/199879 John Coltrane Nature Boy 8:58 Albert Ayler Holy Ghost 7:21 Grachan Moncur Blue Free 6:43 Archie Shepp Hambone 11:41 Are you aware of any additional Ayler recordings from this concert? If so, please share!
danasgoodstuff
I've certainly never caught wind of any more Ayler from this concert existing. Which is a shame 'cause it's Albert at his peak, IMHO.
felser
Everybody's at their peak during that concert.
DMP
I think Ayler’s group played a second number, but it was never issued. There may have been others at the concert, also were never issued. Must have been a hell of a concert!
danasgoodstuff
Yeah, you would have to think that even on a multi-player bill, they did more than one relatively short number. But does it still exist? And everyone is pretty much at a peak. And since some not originally issued material surfaced later... If so, please share! The Ayler discography at http://www.ayler.co.uk/html/sessionography.html lists an unissued version of "Saints" from this date. That's the "ballad" track issued as "Spirits" on Spiritual Unity and as "Saints" on Spirits/Witches and Devils. I'd like to know if Shepp played anything else besides "Hambone" and, ultimately, whether or not all or part of the Sun Ra set turns out to have been recorded. Baraka's notes and some of the subsequent commentary suggest that the answer viz. the Ra material is no but when the Tolliver and Moncur tracks were issued on the lp it got my attention.
