greggery peccary Posted March 11, 2022 Report Share Posted March 11, 2022 This is so sad. I spent last year on a huge Ron Miles kick. From his own stuff to Ben Goldberg to Frisell to Triology. I found his work with saxophonist Fred Hess (who was also based in Colorado) to be very satisfying. I also recommend his work on "Music Along the Way" by Rich Lamb. Can I ask what the band is on those recordings? Miles seemed so comfortable and was always very much himself regardless of setting...at least based on my listening experience. danasgoodstuff Posted March 13, 2022 Report Share Posted March 13, 2022 It's recently occurred to me that in some sense Ron Miles' playing can be seen as an extension of Don Cherry's in that it's the very opposite of the cliched trumpet player as egotist type of playing, not that I don't dig that too sometimes. They're still on the schedule, but now being billed as: Brian Blade, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran & Thomas Morgan: The Music of Ron Miles. As of their last update, they only state that he will be "unable to appear at Big Ears due to a medical condition requiring surgery and an extended period of convalescence".
