I got a first issue of this in, when, late 1973, early 1974, just in time to get a crash course in the history of the music (one of them anyway), before heading of to college. I'd been reading all the books and learning all the names, but there weren't all the records to go with all the names, so this set was a godsend. Still a sentimental favorite too.

I listened to the entire thing (a few times) for the 200-level Intro to Jazz music history class I took in the spring of 1988 (sophomore year of college).

Made a 90-minute cassette of the later-era tracks (perhaps just the last two LP’s? — though I seem to remember it being on CD, and fewer than 6 CD’s) — for my personal enjoyment.

I still have my set purchased and absorbed about the same time as Jim did the same with his. Quite an experience spinning those LPs over and over! Michael's offering is a bargain imo.

There was a revised version that I picked up on cassette. Not really an improvement, just different. The original is still "definitive" for me.
