Hardbopjazz
Every jazz label in the 50’s and 60’s had their house musicians. The one that comes to mind is James Spaulding. He was on a lot of sessions for Blue Note in the 60's. It wasn't till the 70's where he did his own thing. Thornel Schwartz. Now he only did one records as a leader, everything else was as a house musician. Eddie McFadden also comes to mind. Any others?
Pete C
Mal Waldron & Art Taylor were very busy at Prestige in the '50s.
catesta
Wasn't Billy Higgins pretty much the house drummer for BN?
mikeweil
Hank Jones and Kenny Clarke were for Savoy in the late 1950's. Every producer had his favourites whom he employed as often as possible, at least temporarily.
Pete C
Of course Oscar Peterson for Granz in the '50s. An Hank was Oscar's predecessor with Granz.
Brad
Philly Jo was the house drummer for Prestige for a long time as was Art Blakey for Blue Note. Not exactly on point but certain clubs also had their house musicians. Monk, for example, was the house pianist for Mintons and Tadd Dameron for the Royal Roost a/k/a the Metrolitan (B)opera House. I believe Tyner is now house piano player at Yoshi's in San Fran.
