  1. OK. The exact dates for these sessions are unknown, but Vladimir Simosko's authoritative "Artie Shaw, a Musical Biography and Discography" lists them as "c. 1968".
  2. There is a recent 5-CD set on Jasmine ("Six Star Treats", JASBOX 20-5) which claims to have the "Complete Commercially Released Recordings" of the Gramercy 5 (1940-1954). As a long standing Artie Shaw fan, I also have the Musicmasters sets, but I haven't had time to cross-check all these issues. The Jasmine box seems fairly complete, and certainly much easier to find than the Musicmasters issues dating back from the early 90's. Edit: The sessions referred to above are the last on which he PLAYED. However, Shaw conducted a large orchestra with strings on November 21, 1955, in order to complete the album "Did Someone Say a Party?" on Decca, but these tracks do not have any clarinet solos. The FINAL session in which he had strictly a conducting role was "Artie Shaw Recreates His Great '38-'39 Band" on Capitol ST 2992 in 1963. Walt Levinsky (expertly) played the clarinet solos on these sessions.
  3. Bit off-topic, but here's the next batch: 1455 HARRY JAMES 1946-47 1456 OSCAR PETERSON (R.I.P....) 1952-53 1457 ELLA FITZGERALD 1954-55 1458 BEN WEBSTER 1953-54 1459 JOE BUSHKIN 1947-50 No release date unfortunately, but should be late winter / early spring.
  4. New issues are not being handled by Abeille Musique-they are only reissuing part of the back catalog. Nocturne.fr has released the latest batch and are planning to issue the next one on June 18. Here's a link to the next Benny Goodman CD :Benny Goodman 1949-51
  5. Sorry, after two weeks there was no reaction to the post, so I simply deleted it, so as not to overload the board with useless chatter.
  6. The following new issues from Chronological Classics appear on the FNAC website with a release date of April 23: 1430 THELONIOUS MONK 1951-52 1431 SIDNEY BECHET 1952 (VOL.2) 1432 DUKE ELLINGTON 1953 1433 GENE KRUPA 1953-54 1434 JOE BUSHKIN 1940-46 Not an exceedingly interesting batch (I wish they could have dispensed with the Monk album, I suppose most collectors already have those classic Blue Note and Prestige sessions), but it's good to see this series reappear at last, after a year-long hiatus.
  7. Wow, I didn't realise it was that hard to find. I have the SABA, it's a great 'MOR, late night listening' album, very laid back. Sorry I can't currently point you in the direction of a vinyl but if I see one I'll ping you a mail. One thing that amuses me about this LP is there are two sets of notes on the back. The set on the left is in German and looks quite scholarly and very matter-of-fact with session details etc, Boland's life story etc. The set on the right in English doesn't seem to correlate at all with the German translation - somewhat 'Un-PC' views about canoodling with the ladies and late night smooching etc. Must have been written by Austin Powers ! Thanks sidewinder. Just sent you a PM.
  8. This must be one of the hardest to find Boland albums. My internet search has yielded practically nothing. Anyone in possession of a VG+/M copy of that item and willing to part with it? I offer up to $100 for it. Paypal payment only. Thanks in advance. Following are the varoius editions of this LP: Saba SB 15136 MPS 15136 MPS-BASF CRM 642 MPS-BASF 21 20642-3 CRYSTAL 45795
  9. I heard from a reliable source that their European distributor recently went belly up owing the label a large amount of money. Whether they can survive this setback remains to be seen. I think I've already posted it elsewhere-their new distributor is Abeille Musique France. They are at the present busy reissuing the back catalog, but no new issues have appeared after #1429( Lionel Hampton 1951-53). However you will be able to find a large slice of the back catalog here: Chronological Classics

  11. Thanks for your kind post, Flurin; Just out of three years in hospital. Sorry to have let you down during all this time. Sent you a PM regarding the Henderson series, which is now complete, plus other goodies. Hope to hear from you soon.
  12. The French label Abeille Musique has re-released part of the back catalog of the great Classics collection : abeille musique
  13. I haven't checked in detail, but at least two titles are unaccountably missing from this compilation : 062769-1 Why Shouldn't I? from March 20, 1941 (CD 8), and 067747-1 Is It Taboo? from Sept. 3, 1941 (CD 9). Also, the set includes only a small part of the 1945 sessions: 15 dates are missing from that year alone.

  15. Sorry for that omission. An alternate of 514 (take unknown) "The Jeep Is Jumping" appeared on Norgran 101. My post above has been corrected accordingly.
