Lately I've noticed an overabundance of "definately"s floating around the board (just search for the word). Is that the way it's going to be spelled in the near future, or is it still "definitely"? The reason I ask: the other day I came across two of these on the NYT site ... must have slipped through, I thought. Then I saw it on cnn.com, etc. Just wondering. Cheers! Late Posted November 26, 2004 Report Share Posted November 26, 2004 Some word processing programs' Spell Check software actually gives the word "defiantly" as the first choice when "definitely" is spelled with the letter A. I see this all the time in student papers. It can get pretty funny: "Elizabeth Bishop's poem The Fish defiantly describes an epiphany ... " Ouch. I know my grammar is far from perfect (or even correct), but I see the misuse of loose in place of lose on almost every message board I visit.
