Glad to note that Archie Shepp 'Things Have Got To Change' and Pharoah Sanders 'Live at the East' will be seeing the light of day on CD again.

Those were my sentiments exactly when I saw this list. I'll probably pass on the Shepp title, but the Sanders will at last be mine!

Is this the first appearance on compact disc of this Konitz title?

It's available on iTunes, but I've never heard it. Worth picking up?

AMG review (for what it's worth...)

I had this album way back in my vinyl days, but to be honest I don't remember it at all...

"One of the lesser-known Lee Konitz albums, this LP (which has not been reissued yet on CD) features the altoist joined by six brass and a rhythm section for eight Jimmy Giuffre arrangements. The shouting brass contrasts well with Konitz's cool-toned solos and together they perform eight underplayed standards. Guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Bill Evans (who are on four songs apiece) are major assets behind Konitz on this pleasing set."

"Shouting" brass and Lee Konitz? Not a combination I'd think of, but, who knows, maybe it works.

I agree. On the other hand, Jim Hall and Bill Evans are a big plus.

I wish I'd remember how this album was. I obviously haven't listened to it very much...

TOCJ 66387 Charlap,Bill(p)/Autumn in New York 2500

I wonder if this is different from Charlap's "Live at the Village Vanguard" that has just been released. I hope it is. I'm always ready for more Charlap -- esp. in a trio setting.

The Konitz had been issued on CD in Japan previously.

I remember a fellow named Ron Arfin who used to trade at the Jazz Trading Post was trying to find it for several years; hopefully he can enjoy it now.

I got this on HMV vinyl the other day, it's nearly as good as the rest of Konitz other Verve titles, I haven't fully taken it in , but it doesn't come acorss badly at all.

Has Cleopatra's Needle been out on compact disc already? Either way, it's a great album.

Bummer that the prices have gone back up. The last few batches of CDs from the majors have been 1500-1800 Yen. These new releases, with prices at 2300-2500 Yen, will be priced too high to generate too many sales to US buyers. I guess Japan isn't going through the same market contraction that the US is seeing.

Glad to see the Paul Gonsalves 'Boom Jackie - Boom Chick' becoming available.
The recent prices the original vinyl reached recently on eBay scared me away!

You could buy at least 100 of the CDs for the price of a moth-eaten vinyl. :D

I'll be putting in an advance order for all 3 of the Ross/Gonsalves/Morrisey I think.

Saves wearing out the vinyl on the 'Cleo'. :)

That Dick Morrisey looks really nice. Another rare 60s album and a very under-valued tenorist. Little chance of ever seeing a vinyl of that one.

They sound great. I like this one (I have it from iTunes). Not essential Konitz, but you'd like it Late.

I'll go for the Ross & Morrissey as well....and after hearing a few sound bites at some French site, might add the Jazz Quintet 60 to the cart. Don't know anything about the Gonsalves....any online preview clips that you know of?? I'd like to hear a few notes.

Weizen — look for sound samples of the first "Impressed" compilation by Gilles Peterson. It has one track from the Gonsalves album (a very nice swinger). If that track is any indication, the album should be fine indeed. The sound too (at least on that one track) is excellent.

Yep, the 'Impressed' is a good place to sample it. Mmm - might well add the 'Jazz Quintet 60' to my eventual order too. :w

It could be the same recording. I haven't found an english tracklist, but both CDs have 9 tracks and the lenght of the tracknames in japanese (whose characters only display as cubes in my browser) on the japanese CD are similar to the english tracklist of the US CD.

One can use an online translation service like http://babelfish.altavista.com in such cases, and then you get:

1. Rocker
2. autumn in New York
3. God child
4. ready is ア tramp
5. イッツ only ア paying per moon
6. the my シャイニング hour
7. all across the city

9. rust knight ホエン ウィ ワー young

So it's obviously the same!

TOCJ 66387 Charlap,Bill(p)/Autumn in New York 2500

I wonder if this is different from Charlap's "Live at the Village Vanguard" that has just been released. I hope it is. I'm always ready for more Charlap -- esp. in a trio setting.

It could be the same recording. I haven't found an english tracklist, but both CDs have 9 tracks and the lenght of the tracknames in japanese (whose characters only display as cubes in my browser) on the japanese CD are similar to the english tracklist of the US CD.

There's an Eric Alexander 'Sunday in New York' mini-lp being released at about the same time. Sounds as though some wires got crossed somewhere along the line?

Don't know anything about the Gonsalves....any online preview clips that you know of? I'd like to hear a few notes.

Weizen — look for sound samples of the first "Impressed" compilation by Gilles Peterson. It has one track from the Gonsalves album (a very nice swinger). If that track is any indication, the album should be fine indeed. The sound too (at least on that one track) is excellent.

:tup

Found it on Vol 2........sounds excellent! :tup Had never heard of those compilations before....thanks. :tup I also checked out -- and very much enjoyed -- that one number by the Michael Garrick Trio ('First Born'). Think I'll need to get that cd as well. :w

Why not e-mail Hiroshi Tanno: hiroshi@earlyrecords.com - he takes PayPal and his shipping rates are quite reasonable.
