May 1943 the same Paul Gonsalves of later Basie/Ellington fame? (Lord discography indicates it is). I know he did military service in WW2 -- was he in India, doing some playing on the side? Pinckney, Jr. Asian Music, Vol. 21, No. 1 (Autumn, 1989 - Winter, 1990), pp. 35-77 That source states: "Several other Goan musicians, including bassist Tony Gonsalves and saxophonists Paul Gonsalves (not the same Paul Gonsalves who joined Duke Ellington's band in 1951) and Rudy Cottton, recorded with Indian swing bands in the 1930s and 1940s." Paul Gonsalves did serve in India during WW2 and was on the sessions in question.A friend of mine,who has recently died,told me that while he (my friend) was serving in Calcutta with the RAF Paul would sit in with the Weatherford band at the hotel gig they had. Years later when Ellington came to Europe my friend managed to speak to Paul and reminded him of his Indian service,which Paul,apparently, recalled with great affection. I know he's not the only one (so ALL of you who do, also deserve such thanks), but I especially wanted to say that for whatever few times Chuck says "did you ever think of buying your own discography??" -- WAY more often than not, Chuck comes through with the info, with nary a sour word.
