Chet Baker-Gerry Mulligan, which may have been the first notable, regular-working such quartet.

some i enjoyed recently:

noah howard - and about love (esp)
http://www.last.fm/m.../And About Love

sam rivers - waves (rivers does play piano here and there though, and it has a tuba as the second horn so in a sense it's more a quartet with two bass players)
http://www.last.fm/m...am Rivers/Waves

marion brown's first esp album

charles tyler - eastern man alone

Because you mention Wm Parker Quartet, you may be particularly interested in Fred Anderson's most recent on Thrill Jockey, From The River To The Ocean.

Will have to check out that Allan Chase disc.

John McNeil "East Coast Cool" and Joe Morris' Bass Quartet are two other pianoless quartet discs he appears on.

Though two basses make it a quintet, Charles Tyler's Nessa date is also excellent (and finally back in print).

Some piano-less quartet music also makes it onto the Braxton Arista Mosaic.

Frank Lowe had a great band with Earl Cross, Didier Levallet and George Brown that recorded for Palm and Marge - some of this material is available on CD. Also the early David Murray stuff with Olu Dara is very, very nice.

Though Osborne's heaviest work was in a trio, this quartet is pretty nice stuff. Also, here's a fine archival date from Bobby Bradford (w/ James Newton; you'll have to scroll down).

Some out of print gems that hopefully make their way back into regular circulation:
Ric Colbeck - The Sun Is Coming Up - (Fontana)
New York Art Quartet - Mohawk - (Fontana)
Steve Lacy - Sortie - (GTA)
Ted Curson - Tears for Dolphy - (Fontana, w/ Bill Barron)
Ted Curson - Urge - (Fontana, w/ Booker Ervin)
Alan Shorter - Orgasm - (Verve)
Bill Dixon/Archie Shepp - Quartet - (Savoy)

Lotta stuff out there, including:

Mingus' 4tet w. Curson, Dolphy, Richmond
Ayler 4tet w. Cherry, Peacock, Murray
AEC minus Jarman - Coming Home Jamaica & Urban Magic
AEC minus Bowie - Sirius Calling & The Meeting
Billy Bang 4tet: Valve no. 10 w. Frank Lowe, Sirone, Denis Charles
Lacy, Rudd, Henry Grimes, Denis Charles - School Days
Pee Wee Russell/Marshall Brown 4tet - Columbia and Impulse albums
Masahiko Togashi: "Bura-Bura" w. Lacy, Cherry, Holland
John Lindberg 4tets w. Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Douglas, Larry Ochs, Baikida Carrol, Ed Thigpen, Andrew Cyrille, Steve Gorn & Susie Ibarra on Bounce, The Catbird Sings, A Tree Frog Tonality, and Ruminations Upon Ives and Gottschalk

Also a lot of quartets with guitar instead of piano, but that's somewhat the same thing. Vibes too.

It will be interesting to see what turns up pre-WW 2.

I've long wanted to do a Night Lights show about this--folks have already named most of the ones I've got in mind (glad to see you threw in the Pee Wee Russell Impulse/Columbias, Paul), so I'll add only a bit of a curveball: Joe Mooney.

eBay? Really?

Seriously, good for you on that one. There was a very limited pressing on that one and AFAIK, they're all gone.

Similar mistake at the last Jazz a Vienne, in front of 8000 thousands people, J-P Boutellier announced Steve Coleman instead of Steve Grossman for the after show. Not a big deal but not very professional.
