Does anyone have any information about Fred Lacey, the composer of "Theme for Ernie"? - Recorded most famously by Trane, and also by Archie Shepp and others. Thanks in advance for any info that anyone can provide.

Ira Gitler in his liner notes to Coltrane's 'Soultrane' album - where 'Theme for Ernie' was introduced - says Freddie Lacey was a Philadelphian. Maybe some Philadelphian on this board know something about him.
Was he the same Fred Lacey who played guitar with Lester Young in the forties?

Fred Lacey was indeed a Philadelphian. Bootsie Barnes knew him well - he was his teacher. Apparently, McCoy Tyner did an entire record of Lacey tunes that has yet to be released. Lacey also spent some time in the slammer - Jimmy Heath knew him there.
Lacey was a guitarist, so it is possible he is the one with Lester.
A mystery figure, for sure.
Bertrand.

So he IS the one who played with Prez - I think on some Aladdin sides, for instance.
Interesting! I never thought about this guy being the same who wrote "Theme for Ernie" (which is a marvel)!
