and she apparently plays it more like larry goldings than jimmy smith. horray for that too. what in the hell. does this chick still gig around. i want to see her. who has info
couw
the lady herself?

I met her once when she was actually playing on the sidewalk in front of a computer store (Vobis, a big chain) on opening day. That was in the 80s.

My dad had her Charlie Parker LP, which is still her best stuff, I think, and at that live gig, she gave it everything she had. Love her stuff, although some of her later recordings seemed a bit too polished.

Live she is stunning. Her foot work is unblelievable. Unbelievable.

AND, the drum solo by Dennis Chambers starting at 07:11 on "Samba And the Drum Stick" on Junkando (1997) is the WILDEST SH*T I have EVER heard ... and, being a drummer myself, I have a myriad of drum solos in my collection.

Check that one out!

Cheers!

I'm based in Germany.

I have Social Democrats farting in Berlin instead.

I'm glad the website has no pictures of her in a Unity t-shirt. Someone else is, though...

couw

Claude,

be advised that Dennerlein has a decidedly German nose. All photos are taken from a favourable angle. That thing is, err, prominent.

I have one of those shnoozles as well.

That's why I just lo wub.gif ve her.
couw
erm... yes pretty woman, but she has -- typically german -- too many teeth as well and tries to cover those with her too tiny lips. don't work, looks silly, better show what you got, all that. She can play though and that's important isn't it? agree with deus that her later stuff got too polished. Don't have any of it myself, but used to listen to her albums at a friend's place.

Re: her footverk, I understand that she uses midi pedals instead of the B3 pedals, which triggers an acoustic bass sample. But don't quote me on that; I'm just repeating what I thought B3-er told me a long time ago...

Well, she definitely didn't do that when I saw her!!!!
No, no, no. No way, José!

Things might have changed lately (I did hear that she was layin' back a bit to let the acoustic bass take the part), but ... when I saw her (three/four times), I was just mesmerized by those flyin' feet. Incredibly accurate, swingin' like mad and a groove feel to just make you go nuts.

Cheers!

The pedals are "B3" pedals, she just has them "midi-fied" so she can use other sounds besides the Hammond bass pedal sound, which is fairly limited. Whether or not she uses samples doesn't take away from her technique at all, it just provides her with more options for bass sounds.

She probably uses the stock pedal sound every now and then. But I know for sure she used a sound module on "Junkaroo" on some tracks, as well as other discs.

I saw Barbara Dennerlein in Jefferson City, Missouri a few years ago. She is very good looking, and she can play! She also jammed with Gloria Coleman and Amina Claudine Myers while she was there. It was amzing to see three B-3ers playing at the same time.
chris olivarez
Last I heard she was married to some dude named Andre. I do enjoy her playing.
Jim Alfredson
That would've been a great show to see!

RE: the original post, I wouldn't compare Dennerlein's playing to Goldings... she's got her own thing. That said, one of my favorite records of hers is one from the '80s (can't remember the name nor the title) that was released in Japan (perhaps DIW?) that is a quartet date and she plays very straight-ahead organ stuff yet with her own style. Great record.

It appears that she has a lot of stuff that's oop. Is her private label a paypal label?

YO WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS CHICK BEFORE. I MEAN, IVE HEARD OF SHIRLEY SCOTT, WHY NOT THIS CHICK??? I CANT BELIEVE WHAT IVE BEEN MISSING. IVE HARDLY SEEN ANY TRULY AMAZINGILY TALENED WOMAN MUSICIANS IN MY LIFE BUT I BET SHE IS ONE OF THEM. AND SHE IS **HOT!!!** OH MY GOD. IT IS LIKE IF THE BROAD FROM MANHATTAN TRANSFER WAS HOTTER, FROM GERMANY, AND PLAYED THE ORGAN. AND HER NAME IS BARBARA LIKE MY FAVORITE CITY SANTA BARABRA.

WHO THINKS THEY CAN GUESS WHAT HER FAVORITE BABY FACE ALBUM IS. DO YOU THINK BARBARA IS DOWN WITH GRAND MASTER BABYFACE. MAYBE IF I DO HER SHE WILL AGREE TO BE THE PHANTOM ORGANIST IN: "A BABYFACE SUPREME" :THE BABY FACE WILLETE STORY.

DO U KNOW A GUY TOLD ME ONCE; HE SAID HOW HE SAW BABY FACE AT A BAR IN CENTRAL AVE HE WAS WORKING AT FOR THE NIGHT AND HE WAS HELLA DRUNK AND HE JUST FEEL FLAT ON HIS FACE, PISS FUCKING DRUNK. RIGHT THEN AND THERE, HE WAS **THAT** FUCKED UP! HELL YEAH. THANK YOU BABYFACE INVENTOR OF ORGAN FUNK

She can play that's for sure, but a little too much at times. When I saw her perform with sax and drums it was all fast tempos with little dynamics and virtuoso modern bop solos, no space in the music, no real relaxation, and no room for building a climax as they always started at the highest level of density. A waste of talent, at least in that instance.

Allow me to suggest:
Straight Ahead (Ray Anderson on trombone): Enja 5077 -1989
Hot Stuff: Enja 79654 - 1990
Take Off (Roy Hargrove, Ray Anderson, Joe Locke, Lonnie Plaxico, etc.): Verve 314 527 664-2 - 1995

She's been around a while longer than Goldings. She's definitely processed Larry Young. I saw her on a double bill with DeFrancesco in Montreal about 10 years ago. She had Ray Anderson with her.

Pete, any suggestions on where to start - if you've heard her albums?
Jim Alfredson
Straight Ahead, that was the record I was talking about (very apt title, eh?) Great record.

Remind me never to ask you: "does this dress make me look fat?"

...and ARIC where the hell have you been ya whippersnapper? You should have been privy to Barbara in the early eighties when she was a bit fresher and her teeth were smaller and her lips were bigger! wub.gif

Vint! You! In a DRESS!?!!

I don't know what I'd say, but I doubt it would be that it makes you look fat.

Killer Joe from Hot Stuff is Killer Barbara. One of the first B-3 recordings that captured my attention. Here's a nice pic from the AMG website. She can push my bass pedals anytime she wants.

The other 2 I suggested in my earlier post in this thread are also worth getting.
